Satan’s Pilgrims - Peregrinaje Instromundial 7” (Ghost Highway Recordings)
Satan’s Pilgrims deliver another remarkable record in this four-song 45 with a title that is loosely translated, ‘Worldwide Instrumental Pilgrimage.’ With a runtime of just over 10 minutes, the Pilgrims prove, once again, why they are one of the gold standards of surf music! The three guitars, compliments of Scott, Bob, and Garrett each have a unique tone, and play their parts well. Their dance is independent yet synergistic; players who not only love music but know music. Catchy melodies are plucked with precision while a second guitar rhythmically drips a steady supply of juicy notes. A third guitar completes the compositions with solid-sounding chords and John’s bass lines present a groovy yet firm backbone. Ted keeps the Pilgrims on time with his swift hands and dependable drumming.
The first track, “Crying in a Storm” is a cover of a 1965 Japanese song performed by Emy Jackson. It’s a fun track, filled with soul. I’d imagine this is the first cover version with glissando. Up next is “32 Miles to Avalon.” It’s a dreamy number, you’d listen to relaxing in the sun with a nice drink in hand. Long-time fans will appreciate the appearance of Dave Pilgrim on guitar.
Side B has a first-wave feel and the multi-guitars resonate keeping the listener fully engaged. It commences with a rockin’ little number, “The Line Up.” If you didn’t know better, you’d be convinced you were listening to one of the legends of yore. “Rev-It” is a jukebox-ready, toe-tappin' delight! Plain and simple, it’s fun! Listen carefully as there is additional percussion presented on this track.
The 300 records were released by Ghost Highway of Spain: 150 on black vinyl, 150 on orange vinyl. Both color series were numbered out of 150. The vinyl versions were devoured by ravenous fans almost overnight, but you can still support the band by purchasing the digital downloads for a mere $4 (or more!).
