Permalink Fenders with matching color headstocks

New Topic

I have a crush on fenders with matching colors on the hadstock. Here is a picture of my 2003 CIJ. Just wondering if this type of colored hadstock existed in the 60`s. I thought not, but I remember reading a book about vintage fender basses that had a picture of a jazz bass with matching colors?

I don't like them on anything BUT Jaguars. For some reason it just suits a Jag very well!

Also, that's a kickass color there,

My AVRI custom-build Jag has a matching headstock.

Does the existence of painted AVRI headstocks suggest they were available in the 60s?

I think guitars with dark wood fretboards look best with matching painted headstocks, but maple fretboards are better with unpainted maple headstocks

Some Jaguars certainly had matching headstocks in the 60s. A lot of times, the custom color guitars came with matching headstocks, like red and lake placid blue. I don't think it was common with many of the other Fenders - the Jazz Bass (as shown in the photo) could have them. I don't think the student models had them, but some of the competition Mustangs did.

Yes, matching headstocks were a thing in the '60s. Specifically on the offsets in custom colors. Some general rules to keep mind regarding 50's/60's Fenders...

  • Custom Color=anything besides Sunburst (Blonde for the Tele's)
  • Custom Color Jazzmasters/Jaguar= Matching headstocks

The only custom color Jag/Jazzmaster that would not have had a matching headstock would be a Blonde example.

If you see a custom color Jag/Jazzmaster from the 60's (besides blonde) with a plain headstock...that would indicate it's a refin.

That's why I never understood why AVRIs and AV's that are otherwise very vintage correct have this one glaringly obvious detail overlooked.
