Permalink New Pickup Suggestions for Jet King

New Topic

Hey Surfers,

I've had my Jazzmaster style P90's in my Jet King for a while and I just can't bond with them anymore, partially due to my new Squier Jag sounding incredible and nailing the surf sound better than anything else haha. I want to play this guitar, but as soon as I plug it in I get so bored with the sound.

I know they aren't exactly like Jazzmaster pickups, but I just can't seem to jive with the Jazzmaster sound even after playing some in store. I've stumbled upon some interesting P90 or mini-hum pickups that might make the guitar interesting again. I don't want to spend a ton, looking at you Mojo and TV, but I know decent pickups aren't cheap.
- Tele (from Bootstrap Pickups)
- Dynasonic (from Gemini, Gabojo, or Mojo)
- Gold Foils (Guyatone style)
- Hershey Bar (from Gemini)
- Magnatone from TV Jones

I keep wanting to try gold foils, but my concern is they'll be too mid heavy. Any other suggestions or pickups to stay away from?

I'm a huge fan of vintage Dearmond pickups, so I would recommend either the dynasonic or hershey bar type pickups on your list. I've got a modern Dynasonic reissue in the bridge position of one of my guitars, and it's
a bit thicker sounding than a Jaguar bridge pickup - to me it's great for Link Wray type sounds, among other things. The hershey bar type is the same construction as the Dearmond goldfoils that came after them, though perhaps with lower resistance than the goldfoils. Those sound great in the neck position, and are great for surf sounds. In my guitar with a reissue Dynasonic in bridge position and a vintage Dearmond goldfoil type pickup in the bridge, the combo of those two pickups definitely brings the surf sound. Again, not going to sound just like a Jaguar, but you want different sounds from different guitars.

Then as far as thinking gold foils, the vintage Japanese (Teisco etc.) gold foils are great for trashy overdriven blues type tones. They can work for surf tones, but maybe aren't what you are looking for. The Dearmond type goldfoils can do the overdriven blues sound as well, but are more versatile in my mind.

It's funny you replied, I just read your post about your sweet Mustang with Dearmonds in it like two hours before you replied haha. I was listening to more Dynasonic videos, most are country or rockabilly, but they do sound incredible. I was always concerned they'd be too clean and hi-fi but that doesn't seem to be the case. There's a nice sweetness/punch to it. I think they are at the top of the consideration list.
