Back in 1965, Semie Mosely of Mosrite hired Ed Sanner to design a fuzz circuit, and the world’s second fuzztone, the Mosrite FUZZrite, was born. This is the fuzz heard on Iron Butterfly’s “In A Gadda Da Vida,” “Blue’s Theme” by Davie Allen & the Arrows, and the Ventures’ “2000 Pound Bee.” Supposedly Hendrix had one too.
Fast forward to 2024…
Bob Shade of Hallmark Guitars asked Ed Sanner - now 87 years old! - to produce a limited run of just 30 FUZZrites, and all of them were 100% hand-built by the legendary designer himself in his Bakersfield, CA workshop. Like the very earliest OG FUZZrites, the reissue has germanium transitors and sounds smooth and tight, or wild and out of control, depending on how the Depth knob is positioned. Not only that, but Ed Sanner found a bunch of NOS vintage Mosrite knobs in his stash, and they were installed on these too.
Considering every solder joint was done by the OG designer, I think these are a bargain at $375 shipped, tax included. I bought one and it sounds gnarly. It is head and shoulders better than the Catalinbread Fuzzrite, which by comparison sounds harsh and unmusical to me. It looks virtually identical to a 1960s FUZZrite, except the case is laser-etched instead of printed, so the lettering won’t rub off.
Bob Shade told me this morning that he only has a handful of them left to sell. Because it’s such a limited run, he doesn’t list it on the Hallmark website. If you want to buy one, you need to email Bob directly at hallmarkguitars@verizon.net and put "Fuzzrite" in the heading with a note you would like to purchase one.

I am hoping this beats out the Catalinabread box. I found that my extremely cheap Danelectro French Toast got a better sound. I had a friend who had a real fuzz-rite many years ago and that thing was a GREAT sounding monster!

It absolutely will beat out a Catalinbread Fuzzrite.
I found the Cat to sound harsh and unmusical. The Hallmark/Mosrite sounds smooth and controlled at lower settings or wild and crazy when dialed up more, but it always sounds really bitchen. I think you will be very satisfied.
