Who was the first wave band to record Malagueña as a surf Instro? The Trashmen? It was popular Cuban folk track before that right?

According to wikipedia the origin is US, Lecuona taking the melody from Gottschalk. I think The Tornadoes’ version probably was recorded prior to The Trashmen’s rendition.

The Tornadoes recording called "Malagueña" on their LP "Bustin' Surfboards" is NOT the same song as the one recorded by the Trashmen. It is a version of "Dark Eyes". The chords and some sections in the middle part are similar, but the intro and the main melody are quite different.

It's quite funny actually that the Kilaueas also recorded a great version of "Dark Eyes" under the name "Malagueña" on their album "Mundaka Calls".

Thanks for mentioning this. The core theme of Malaguena appears in Gottschalk's rippingly rapid piano piece Souvenirs d'Andalousie. This piece has several dramatic themes not in Malaguena. Lecuona's Malaguena. Wikipedia noted Gottschalk was very famous in USA and had a fatal episode, apparently a heart attack, while performing his piece "Tremolo." So, there are similarities between Gottschalk and Ventures member Gerry McGee, who died while performing, possibly with tremolo.
