How does one get this guitar tone? |

When we played with Messer Chups a few years ago, Oleg plugged his Jazzmaster into Mike's tube reverb unit and amp (both Gomez Amplification, but similar to a Fender reverb unit and Showman). The tone he got sounded like so many of their recordings. Oleg tweaked the reverb settings for different songs, but that minimal signal chain delivered the goods. He's an incredible guitarist. -murph —http://www.reverbnation.com/elmiragesurf "I knew I was in trouble when the Coco-Loco tasted like water!" -- morphball |

I think a lot of headroom like you get with a Twin Reverb or Showman gives him a lot dynamic range, in addition to the touch, like Murph said. —The Mystery Men? |

Thanks for the replies. Oleg is my favorite surf guitar player. His style and feel are just too cool. Original song writing too. I think he has a light touch, at least as far as I van tell from watching his performance on YouTube. He also uses the vibrato with two fingers, while the hand is behind the bridge. To me that indicates a vibrato arm with a spring that is set loose rather than tight. @Murph, I'm going to check out your band. Cool to have been booked together with Messer Chups. Did you notice if Oleg used heavy or light gauge strings? Round or flatwounds? Last edited: May 07, 2024 15:38:26 |

When I saw them recently, he was playing through a Surfybear into a Twin Reverb. Sounded pretty much like it does on the recordings. |

I just saw them in Morgantown WV about 2 months ago. Oleg had a pretty simple setup. Jazzmaster + Fender Twin Reverb + Surfy Bear. I've been wondering if his Fender Jazzmaster is an American or Mexican made. The tone was massive, crisp, and on point. —https://thedreadtones.bandcamp.com/ |

Nothing wrong with simply going SurgyBear straight into a Twin Reverb. The only thing I would personally add is a Brownfacer pedal. Those little units make a massive difference in tone/playability. —MooreLoud.com - A tribute to Dick Dale. New Singles "Finish Line" and "Paradiso" on Bandcamp and website. |

Try contacting Oleg and asking him if you can borrow his fingers. — |

You mean this pedal from Surfy Industries, I assume? Your text to link here... Having read the product info, I'm not sure how it will help. Can you explain or link an example? Last edited: May 13, 2024 15:10:21 |

His guitar is a '62 AVRI Fender Jazzmaster with Mastery Bridge ... 11-48 Ernie Ball strings ... I suggest you spend as much time as you can with a Fender AB763 circuit (Deluxe Reverb, Twin Reverb or Showman) ... and of course a good spring reverb if you really want to get drippy ... and practice, practice, practice ... —When you have to shoot ... shoot! Usual 62 avri and 11 roundwounds, nothing fancy. Direct into tank and Fender amp, a lot of sound goes from his hands. —Waikiki Makaki surf-rock band from Ukraine https://linktr.ee/waikikimakaki Lost Diver https://lostdiver.bandcamp.com |

The essentials have been detailed already, but in parts Oleg uses palm muting and lots of subtle use of the guitar's tremolo bar. |

I'm practicing to make a habit of resting right hand behind the bridge, and making gentle use of the vibrato. |

Thanks everyone for your comments. I use a (Tonemaster) Princeton with a Surfybear metal and a Surfytrem. Bigger Fender valve amps are not an option. Young kids, neighbours etc. Now it is time to go practice, practice, practice. |

He's using palm muting in the section from 0:47-0:57, and also when he repeats that phrase later in the song. |

So I have a solid state Fender amp with beautiful clean sound that I'd like to make sound more like a Twin Reverb. I bought a Sonic Blue Twanger just for this purpose but I'm unsure where to place it in my signal chain for best effect. I have my Strat going into a Surfy Bear Classic, then the SBT, then Blossom Point. The problem is way too much ice pick! Should I move the SBT? Would it work in the effects loop part of my pedal board? I'm really dying to steal Oleg's tone... Last edited: Jun 01, 2024 10:29:48 |
