Officially going to this as I've paid for a ticket and have my room paid for. Unsure if Mr. Joe lives in the area or if others have made recommendations but this summer will be my very first time to Italy (and Europe) and I hope to make it a broad cultural experience. Obviously one can use Trip Advisor, but I always like real direct experience in visiting an area. Has anyone posted pointers as to what to see, where to eat, where to drink (unfortunately more a microbrewery beer drinker than a wine drinker, but open to trying) what to do, or etiquette as far as dress or manners that might be different than in Kansas City. Although my Italian will be extremely limited, I've found on previous trips interactions with the locals are the best part of the trip in striving in maybe the smallest of ways to a global community of understanding and good will. I'm actually doing this trip in between jobs and will be in Europe for three months (was going to do less but flying in late May to late August was several hundred dollars less expensive) and hope to somehow make friends over there and become enlightened by their ways. Doing a loop from Denmark through Norway, Sweden, Finland, the Baltics, and Germany with this being my only detour as it appears there are inexpensive flights to that part of Italy. Hopefully this post wasn't too long. Sort of sad I won't make it to the convention in California this year as many of my favorite bands are playing there this year. Livorno from what I seen has mixed reviews... that waterfront looks great but as far as history some have said it lost some of its identity during the wars.
I have been there twice and surely may help) Not easy to find a craft beer, but food and local beer are great mostly everywhere, walking the channels and sitting where you find appealing is fun. But my food for these days is mostly Tiki Cocktails on a spot and burgers from Surfer Joe diner. Ponce bar is surely worth visiting as well. A lot of interesting places around Livorno if you have some time beside the fest. Mixed reviews? Never saw them. That’s the best place and time on Earth.
See you there!
Thank you! Yes indeed see you there. Hoping to see some other genres of music there. Wouldn't mind seeing the band Stoned Jesus someday too. Stay safe and thanks again.
Stoned Jesus is ok but we also have wonderful surf bands in Ukraine)
I'm not surprised there are better bands in the Ukraine. It seems the more you know about music the less you know. So many underground great bands out there. Hopefully we'll meet and you can educate me more... that would be great. It is shaping up to be a great experience.

Here is a thread from a few years ago about visiting Livorno: Tips for visiting Livorno (Surfer Joe summer fest)
A while back I ran across an article from the BBC about Livorno and started a thread about it here.
Direct link to the article: Tuscany's 'unattractive', unmissable town

We were there with Clarry and hardly could walk after half dozen of ponces. Great place!

I see that good budget hotel options are just disappearing, so I highly advice to hurry up. Most of the places that I considered are already fully booked.
I mean $300-400/4 nights range, walking distance from Surfer Joe, surely expensive option are still there.
And I should warn you that to walk a couple km every late night, drunk and whole day on your feet, is not easy. So this time I have found one in 1,7 km!

So you admit you have to drink too much to have a good time?
Very sad. Sorry to read that

To be fair, the same would apply if you’d spent the whole day in the sun eating burgers (or bacon)!

All our life is very sad. We are all just trying to hold on and not to break down, each choosing his own way. I drink and dance. Sorry to read this kind of moralizing from a big man.

Don't listen to the Big Tiki Dude: The Surfer Joe Festival welcomes slightly drunk individuals as long as they are dancing, having fun and appreciate loud music.

AirBnB is worth checking; it looks like there are still some reasonably priced places near Terraza Mascagni. I used to be a bit dubious about airbnb, but the place we stayed at last year was fine. It is definitely a good idea to find somewhere near the festival site, however much or little alcohol you consume. It's a drag having to "commute"!
My family and I stayed on in Livorno for another couple of days after the festival last year. One day we went to a beach down the coast and the other day we visited Lucca. There are lots of great places to visit near Livorno - as well as the town itself.
I have also booked my trains to Livorno and back. Is anyone else coming by train? Worth considering, especially if you fancy staying overnight somewhere (nice) on the way there and back. Probably not too practical for visitors from outside Europe though
