Hey guys- thanks for the nice comments! I'm down to five drum sets now - three vintage and two newer (2010s) but they'd all be appropriate for our genre, depending on the situation.

Moving sucks.

...like when we played at the Velvet Lounge (U St, NW DC)

I still have nightmares about load in/out at the Velvet Lounge. Great place to play, but hooooooo those stairs!

Ever play the old Quarry House in Silver Spring? Nightmare! The 50+ year-old concrete back stairs were where you loaded in. They were so worn down from up-and-down dragging/loading that there was only a soft rounded edge - not a secure step at all and little room for a foot. Really dark and narrow. Particularly scary when you had a little grease on your feet from the kitchen. Nevertheless, a great place to play. Fun times. I left my hardware case in the doorway, which was on a side street, overnight once (alcohol was involved) and came back the next morning to somehow find them untouched. Not drinking anymore...

I didn't remember the name, but that description of the load-in sure triggered some memories. I'm positive I've played there.

Good luck with your move - never an easy prospect for longtime musicians. I'll keep an eye out in case you abandon NOVA like so many of us have done for points farther south. All we need is a few more people to kickstart the surf/instro scene down here in RVA Smile

Come to think of it, we did play Velvet Lounge once or twice, too. It's all a blur at this point, but I don't remember liking it much. Probably the stairs!

If/when we move from here it will likely be back west - possibly Lawrence, Kansas or possibly New Mexico, Colorado, California or the Pacific Northwest. I do like RVA though, and you never know until you know!

Another cool DC venue (unfortunately with an upstairs load-in) was Red Palace on H Street, also now permanently closed. We opened for the Legendary Shack Shakers there.

Lot of familiar venues mentioned - A friend who put on burlesque shows in DC at the Red Palace and asked me to play guitar for a Doctor Who bit he was doing (he was the emcee). He was dressed up like one of the Doctors, playing a ukelele and singing a tribute song by some band I can no longer remember about Galifrey (Doctor Who homeworld). There's a rock bit during the chorus that I played.

Probably the biggest crowd I ever played in front of, too - 200 or so people - surely nothing compared to what others here have played to, but it was definitely an amazing experience for me. Too bad the RP closed down later on.

Funny part is this was recently after James Corden was a guest star on Doctor Who during the Matt Smith's Doctor. When Stephon, my friend and emcee, was riffing with the audience, he introduced me. The crowd applauded and yelled out James Corden's Doctor Who character's name - I guess I could have passed as his older brother. Big Grin

I never played at the old Quarry House but I watched my friend, Randy Manos' band, The Ubangis, perform there. Loud AF, but a great time. I read the place caught fire but has since been repaired.

Thanks for the confirmation, synchro. I never thought I would try to distance myself from using the word "surf." I no longer get "you mean like the Beach Boys" anymore. Instrumental rock just sounds more appealing, generic, and has a wider audience. Occasionally, I'll say I play Dick Rock. I usually get a funny look with that one. Laughing

Sorry to bump this thread... However, I wanted to let you guys know since we dropped the word "surf" from our band description, we have two big shows scheduled for April! I know I am selling out, but I just want to get out there and play.
