I had never thought of an offset trem’ on a Tele, but it looks great.

I have 2 teles that i had changed the pick ups to give them a more surfy tone. Both have been outfitted with a bigsby. My '92 tele has been mod'ed with twisted teles pups. I used an open nickel cover on the neck pup to give it a smoother strat sound. My other tele is a j mascis signature tele. I put the pups in phase, and kept the 58 bridge. I needed to change the neck pup cause it has alot if mid gain. After alot of research, i went with a vintage '72 pup. I chose that pup because the EQ is a clear sparkly high with a balanced low end. The mids are scooped and it matched the neck pup EQ of an early model jaguar. With both teles i raise the neck pickup higher than the bridge and for surf music i will almost always stay in the middle position. They definately can match the tones for surf with those pups along with my twin, surfy bear reverb, nocturne mystery brain and surfy trem. I even read somewhere that the lively ones used teles in thier early days, but they got stolen. Anyways, i know the purists swear by jazzmasters, jaguars, strats, mosrite, danelectros and silvertones, but my teles can definately surf

I love it. I’ve pondered putting a strangle switch on my Thinline Tele, and possibly a Vega Trem. It should work, perfectly. To turn the tables, my Jaguar sounds great for Country, with the strangle switch disengaged.

That would be cool. If I actually decide to go through with this, I will probably use an S-1 switch. I’d have to think about the architecture, but it might be feasible.

What does the strangle switch do? Ive played a jag before, but never really explored its controls. Ive always favored jazzmasters, mustangs and teles. But i did put jag pickups in my mustang, and thats tge guitar i seem to bond with the most. However i cant take full advantage of those p'ups cause of the control options. Am i missing anything with not having a strangle switch?

I have never used this switch as well as rhythm circuit, so in my opinion you don’t lose anything. But the topic was teles)

That tele - wow! Where did that come from? I love it. I bet it sounds a bit different compared to a regular string-through?

The Strangle Switch routes the signal through a capacitor, which cuts low frequencies. One perfect example would be on a Bass VI, where the Strangle Switch reduces the fundamentals of the notes in the deep bass range, and this reduces the chance that a Bass VI would damage speakers when played though a guitar amp.

On a guitar tuned E2-E4, as opposed to a Bass VI tuned E1-E3, the Strangle Switch might help to reduce muddiness in the lowest register of the guitar. The effect is subtle, but I suspect that on a Tele, it might serve to make the sound a bit more Surf appropriate. I’m not committing to any timeline, but I’ve been thinking of adding a Strangle Switch to my Thinline Telecaster, if I can make it happen with an S-1 switch, just as a test.

As far as your Mustang is concerned, I probably wouldn’t suggest adding a Strangle Switch; it probably won’t make all that much difference. I think that it would have more effect for a Tele bridge pickup. It would be relatively easy to mock-up the effect of a Strangle Switch with just a project box, a couple of 1/4” jacks, a Cap and a switch.

If someone wanted to rig a Strangle Switch for a Tele, I just checked the wiring diagram for an S-1 switch, and it would be very easy.

Basically, the S-1 is four single pole, double throw switches. You could set one up as your Tone Pot and route the signal to one pole that is normally closed, with the bass cut capacitor between that pole and the output, which would be connected to the common lug, which would route out to the output jack. Because it is normally closed, the signal would not be routed through the capacitor when the S-1 was in the normal position, but when the switch is depressed, the signal would route through the cap, cutting the lower frequencies.

In parallel, on one of the other single pole, double throw switches, you could do something similar with the tone cap, so that it’s path to ground would be interrupted when the S-1 is depressed, preventing the tone control from being effective when the strangle cap’ is in use. If the strangle switch is activated and the tone is rolled back there will be a volume loss, so this second circuit would serve as a fail safe.

Do you find that shimming the neck has any benefit regarding tone or sustain with the bigsby? I have a string-through cabronita that I've added a bigsby to and it's great, but I know that some sustain and twang were lost as a result (which was to be expected). Now I'm wondering if increasing the break angle over the saddles would help get some of that sustain back?

Why not? I like a Bigsby and some P90's for surf on a Telecaster! Here is my own modded telecaster in al live studio situation, and this thing rips!
