By pure coincidence, a scammer posted a guitar FS on Facebook yesterday owned by a guy I happen to know. No way the scammer could know I was working on an as-yet-uncompleted deal for it at the time and had the uncropped versions of the photos he stole from my friend's online ad.

This is a pretty familiar scam, posting an item for sale with a low but not entirely unbelievable price. The scammer either gets your money or your personal information (from your communications with them), both of which are valuable to scammers. IOW, if you see a price that's borderline too good to be true, it probably is! There's always time for due diligence.

Also, watch out for this scam account on social media. He's out of the discussion group, but still on Facebook. (Somebody else pointed out the account may have been hijacked, so it's a scam on top of a scam.)

Oh... and I'm trading with my buddy for the guitar, so don't bother asking if you can have his contact info

I never trust anything for sale on Fakebook or any other forum.
Sorry don't mean to crap on SG101 but like all other internet forums there is no buyer protection.
(I am sure there are many honest transactions here on SG101, but I do question membership activities with porn sites being posted)

Ebay is the only reliable platform to buy and sell. Why? They are in charge of making certain that sales are legitimate. As a buyer you have excellent protection from everything from poor description or broken items to lost delivery.
As a seller you build your own reputation.
I have bought and sold over 1000 items.
At least bought and sold 20 guitars and about 50 pedals.
I am not a dealer, just someone who likes to buy and try, then sell if not interested.
The way funds are handled could not be safer or more reliable.

In-person deals can be a little sketchy, but they're my preference. I have no problem walking away from a deal if it feels off.

Please show me a forum on the internet that doesn't get porn spam. We don't have the resources like FB to automatically remove those posts unfortunately.

Of course you should be careful here. A common scam is some new member shows up, reads the for-sale forum, then private messages people saying they have the same items for much less.

I get several emails per week about various scams and security risks online. Because this is part of my profession, I have to keep up on these things, and my employer pays some serious money to keep us up on the risk environment.

What amazes me, is how elaborate some of these schemes are. One of the best clues that something is amiss, is if there is a sense of urgency. If you can’t make the deal at a normal pace, it’s time to take a deep breath and ask yourself if this even could be a scam.

Porn spam is a real headache, for any forum. A few years ago, the forum I moderate was getting clobbered with fake degree spam. I would wake up to dozens, every day. It’s a fine balance, because if you restrict new members, or make them jump through hoops, you’ll chase away legitimate members, as well.

And as far as porn spam on this site goes, I report it as soon as it shows up, and Brian does a good job of staying on top of it. I haven't seen any show up in quite some time.

Appreciate it. When I got my first Jazzmaster in '22, I honestly wasn't sure I was going to like it. The last offset I had was a weird Epiphone back in the early '90s, and I'd converted that one to a fake 7-string (left it 6 strings, but strung it B E A D G B) so it didn't get played quite as much as my other guitars. Now that I know I like the platform, I wanted to get another. Couldn't pass this one up. The U-shaped neck is a little odd, but I'll get used to it!

Thanks for that post, your new JM, along with today’s paper, to prove that it is an authentic, contemporary photo. Very cloak and dagger. I couldn’t resist the jab.

I need another guitar like a need another hole in my head, but a white on white Jazzmaster comes to me in my dreams, and tortures my psyche. I’ve owned Strats, Teles, Jaguars and even an original Coronado, but never a Jazzmaster, which is ironic, considering that, first and foremost, I consider myself a Jazz guitarist, and the JM was seriously designed as a solid body Jazz guitar. I’ve actually played Jazz on one, and they aren’t bad as a Jazz axe.

But that particular guitar you bought is a work of art. The stripes are fascinating, to me, because being in line with the strings and tailpiece, I didn’t even notice them at first. It’s subtle, like a beige Chevy Bel-Air with a 427 badge on the front fender, and a Hurst Competition Plus shifter coming through the floor. You could walk right past it, and not notice, but once you did notice, you can’t ignore it.

IMO, that’n is a keeper.
