Permalink Custom pickguards?

New Topic

Good afternoon,

I’m working on a Strat build, and wanted to make it a little “different”, so I started checking out custom pickguards on Reverb. I finally settled on this one from Decoboom.

What are some customer pickguard manufacturers that you like?

I want to hear Caravan with a drum solo.

That’s an interesting look. I like it.

When Surf Guitar is outlawed only outlaws will play Surf Guitar.

My friends run this company. They do great work and can customize most pick guards to your specs (including artwork).

They also have a great Rockabilly group called The Shakedown Combo with whom we have played many shows with.

Small world! I've bought a lot of Greasy Groove pickguards over the years and as recently as last month. I love the pulp magazine art ones best. I think they're fun and quirky.

I also have some Decoboom pickguards as well - they have some nice designs.

I should also mention that both do excellent neck plates, truss rod covers, etc. - I usually get a neck plate or truss rod cover that matches my Greasy Groove pickguard.

Here are some photos from over the years of guitars with Greasy Groove pickguards, etc...(Gretsch still has the GG pickguard and truss rod cover)...

Love it or hate it, I loved the aesthetics of the Fender Parallel Universe Vol. II Jazz Strat that was produced with a Decoboom pickguard. I traded this one to get my Johnny Marr Jaguar back that I sold to another forum member (on Offset Guitars forum). Glad I made the trade but I'm tempted to get another Jazz Strat if I can find a good deal on one. It's a very nice quality, MIA Fender guitar.

Here's a Tele parts-build I did that my friend loved so much, he bought it off me - all rosewood chuncky U neck, Fralin hum-cancelling pickups, Armadillo Guitar Brass components, Decoboom pickguard.

Also worth mentioning is Spitfire pickguards - wonderful, superior quality tort pickguards reminiscent of early '60s tort pickguards. They're pricey but that goes along with the territory of one-person boutique builders. Mark (of Spitfire) is great to work with and and all-round good guy.

Decoboom is great, I've got several of their pieces!

Another good place is Pickguardian, especially if you've got a weird pickguard. They seem to regularly be out of some materials listed as available on their website, but if you pick a material they have, the work is impeccable. I sent my pickguards to them and got them back with the new pickguards in less than three weeks.

Here's my TV Jones Spectra Sonic Standard with its new pickguard.

And my '93 Guild Brian May Sig Pro. This doesn't look very exciting, but it's much more true to Brian's guitar than the original b/w/b pickguard was (plus I broke it, so I had to replace it no matter what). (Believe it or not, this guitar surfs pretty well!)

Man, some good examples. I'm gonna have to check out Spitfire and Pickguardian. I've got a couple by Greasy Groove; definitely high quality and unique.

Current work in progress. Just waiting for a neck Antiquity Surfer to arrive.

Looks great! Love the accents around the controls and switch. Cool

Looks surprisingly like my Tele, only I went with the split-pole bridge pickup Smile

Those Teles are very nice. I was looking at the Spitfire site earlier; the Green Tort Pearl pickguard is sweet.

Niiice! I'm probably going to get another set of Fralin hum-cancelling pickups for one of my teles. I also had a thinline tele with Fralin Split Steel Poled (noiseless P90s) that I moved on. I may get another set to put into one of my other guitars. I've been on a bit of a noiseless single-coil pickup journey for the last couple of years.

Very cool! Looks good with Sherwood Green, too. Cool

I re-made the pickguard for my Telecaster Filtertron modification and came out better than the first attempt.
It's tricky getting the holes just right for the pickups.
My own design how it wraps the bridge and control plate.

Not really (or at all) traditional, but I am loving this pickguard from Indra Guitars - he designed it for me based on a motif from a book I love.

That’s a work of art. Excellent craftsmanship.
