What Surf bands are you currently listening to? There are a lot of sub genres to dive into, if you’re so inclined.

Slacktone has been one of my favorites for years, as well as The Mermen, and The Ventures. Right off the top of my head, I’d include Pollo Del Mar, Meshugga Beach Party, The Scimitars, Boss Fink, The Verbtones, RIP Tide, The Aqua Velvets, and of course, Los Straitjackets. (Although technically, they’re considered instrumental, not strictly Surf Music.)

At the bottom of the homepage there is a box that lists various sponsors to this forum. It includes a small ad for a documentary CD called Reverb Junkies. Watching that will fill in the gaps for the progress of the genre for the last 60 years. Money well spent.

There are several members of these bands that participate on this site, on a regular basis.

Latest surf project - Now That's What I Call SURF

Thanks for the warm welcome and all the recommendations! I didn't know the surf genre was so diverse and ecclectic! Really diggin the Manakooras!

I’m not as into surf as many of you. My favorite song as a kid was Wipeout. I got into Man…or Astro-Man? in the 90’s. A friend of mine made a mixtape with Maximum Radiation Level on it and I loved it. I picked up a compilation called Bikini World! 15 Surf Stompers from the End of the Century. It was a great compilation. I learned about Los Straitjackets and Sir Bald Diddley and Jackie and the Cedrics from that.

I also got into the Bomboras and the Space Cossacks. I tend to like the space surf sound far more than horror surf (not a big fan), and even more than traditional tunes. I really like Dick Dale, though, of course.

I saw a post in here saying that Star Crunch is kind of like the Jimi Hendrix of surf guitar. In some ways, I can see what he means. I like how MOAM expanded surf by using non-traditional effects and instruments. Trad surf is great, without question, but if everything is traditional, it all starts to sound the same. Bands like Daikaiju, Laika and the Cosmonauts, the Red Elvises, etc, are important for the survival of the genre.

On the other hand, I also like to remember where it started. The Ventures and Dick Dale will always be important.

Anyway, I’m mostly hear to find out what other bands are out there that I might like, and find out how to get a surf guitar sound that I enjoy playing with.

I have a Squier Super-Sonic and a Squier Sonic series strat. I put a GFS Surfrider 180 in the Super-Sonic and a GFS Goldfoil Humbucker in the Strat. I am using a Vox AV30 for the amp. I have only one effect pedal. It’s a tremolo pedal I just got today. I’ve played a long time, but never was that much into fx. I like tremolo and reverb the best. For amp sounds, I tend to like distortion that’s loose and dry. For clean sounds, I like Peavey Bandit cleans, Fender Dual Showman cleans, and Vox AC30 cleans.

Hello RocketKing, welcome to SG101. Are you aware of the Surfer Joe Surf Music Festival held in Livorno every year? You will find a wealth of surf music knowledge here on this site and you come from a country with some great surf bands to seek out, like Surfer Joe and the Bradipos IV.

I'm Hamst3r and I've been an occasional lurker of these forums for several years. In looking stuff up for my surf tracks, like gear and mixing info, I've managed to find my way to this forum time and time again. I make all of my music with virtual instruments, but I strive for realism, so the info I've found has helped a lot with that.

I hope to do more Surf tracks in the future, possibly near future, so I figured it was time to sign up.
