Mike, that looks REALLY good man! That's a new American Reissue guard right? It's got those almost white light green yellowish spots in it, my bassists 2005 Jazz Bass has it but my 2000 and 2003 Jaguars don't. I'm thinking about getting one for my white Jaguar, but they go for about 40 bucks on Ebay.
Looks like Thomastik Infelds on there too.
Thanks, Bill and Ivan. It is an American reissue guard. And yeah, its kinda seems that the aftermarket pickguards vary from the stock ones. Roy Lanham's jazzmaster was the first that fired me up on the Fiesta Red/Tortoise combo. And yes, Thomastik Infeld .12's are what I'm digging these days.

What are you talking about the "shell guard wouldn't work"? Strats look just as bad with white guards!

Come to think of it, I've always thought Roy's Jazzmaster looked sharp too. Leo Jackson had a nice lookin' Jazzmaster as well. I've had a set of Thomastik Infeld 12s on one of my Jaguars for over a year now. They sound better each month.

Speaking of Luther Perkins. I've been watching a lot of Walk the Line as of recently. What a great movie. I love all the actors in the film.
When we see that Luther has switched over to a Jazzmaster you can really tell the difference between that and the Tele. I must say I might just prefer the sound of the Jazzmaster for Luther's style of picking.

Jake, I agree...Walk The Line has become one of my favorite films. (And I have some crazy taste's when it comes to film, I guess). I love biographies, and Mr. Cash's is up there with the best of em. Joaquin Phoenix did an excellent portrayal. And how cute is Reese Witherspoon as June Carter? The woman can really shine, and sing!
On a side note: The guy who plays Bill Black, bassist for June Carter early in the film, is played by "Slick" Joe Fick of The Dempseys. They play a stellar mix of country/rockabilly and are very credited. Last year I had a chance to watch The Dempseys play live, what a show! Slick plays the upright bass with such energy it's amazing! I met with the band after the show, and I must say they are some great guys. Do check em out if you're into rockabilly too. They are truly made of greatness.

I thought the Jazzmaster worked in country, atleast until the chicken picked Telecaster sound became the norm. Now it seems like ever country(can you even call it country) guitarist uses a Strat, Tele, Les Paul, or some crazy modifed version of the three. They all seem to dress like bums too. The Jazzmaster went along well with the "gentleman" look of the older guitarists.

I don't believe you can call it country. Distorted guitars simply rapes all the credibility of the music being country. Lyrics in country also used to be good. Not anymore.
I agree with Ace's opinion of Reese as June. Quite endearing.

Here's a shot of my Jazzmaster. It's actually blonde, not yellow, as I previously said. It's also a '95, not '96.

Nah, I'm kidding, I can take a joke... I do love the shell guards, that's the Madeira look - though, sorry Bill, on Strats (and a Jazz Bass). It just doesn't look as good on a Strat with a fiesta red finish.

After seeing those, it reminded me of the Deke Dickerson Guitar Geek Festival that we went to recently. Not all but alot of it was in that vien of stuff. Doesn't set me on fire, or do I want to play that style. But it was a hoot to watch up close.

My wife absolutely HATES the red tortoise shell guard on a red guitar.
I think it looks good. I'm not a big fan of tortoise guards in general though.

I think the Fiesta Red with a Tortoise shell looks good on the Jazzmaster. Nothing else. I also hate Tortoise shell with Candy Apple. I also like Tortoise shell with sonic blue on a Jazzmaster.

I think some of it has to do with the quality of the reproduction guard on these reissues. The early Japanese imports were too bright, and the early American reissues were too dark. Most of the vintage ones are lookers.

I usually don't like them either, but I always kinda think they look cool on a black guitar. . .like the Strat Hendrix used to play sometimes.

I think that sunburst Jazzmaster may have actually belonged to the Town Hall Party.
Gordon Terry played it, Carl Perkins, and Jerry Merrit used it during one of Gene Vincent's show on the THP.
