I was using Daddario XL and according to specs they really have pretty high tension. With the same gauge Ernie Ball roundwounds the problem disappeared.
Speaking of Ernie Ball, Ernie Ball makes flatwounds too which they claim are lower tension flats plus they come in 10-46 and 11-48. Might be worth a try. Here's what EB claims:
Combines the warmth and depth of traditional flatwound strings with the effortless playability of Ernie Ball’s Slinky series
Precision-wound cobalt alloy ribbon wire construction results in a round, balanced sound
Exceptionally low finger noise when sliding across the strings

It turned out I missed roundwounds so much) I probably will not go back to flatwounds on Jazzmaster. It’s like I took the blanket off the strings.

I find this really interesting. On the Daisy Rock, I had the same experience - I really disliked that guitar with flatwounds after a while. The pickups were woolly, everything felt like it was stuck in tar, it was just the worst. Switching back to rounds on that guitar (even though the new rounds actually ARE stuck in "tar", since they're covered in pink plastic) they're free, open and the guitar can breathe again.
Counterpoint - the new Sparkjag arrived last night ready to donate its neck to the Jag-Stang project. So now I have one with rounds on, and one with flats. And the Jaguar with rounds on is hateful. The vendor actually did a pretty decent set-up on it, so the action is comfortable - but the sound and feel of the guitar is just unbearable to me with the rounds on. And honestly, the same is somewhat true of the Bass VI as well. I'm really looking forward to the Staytrem parts shipping so I can justify putting Labella flats on it. Meanwhile, the humbucker Jagmaster is definitely keeping it's 10-48 Chromes, and I have no plans to use anything different on the custom-pickup Jazzmaster. We'll see what feels right on the Jag-Stang once it's built. But on the Daisy Rock guitar? Just nope. No flats, no way.
So I think it can come down to a guitar-by-guitar preference, as much as a person-by-person preference!
Exactly! I have 12-52 flatwounds on my Jaguar and just love it! My EP almost totally recorded with it.

Wanted to say that I got these washers and they seem to help a lot, thanks. After some experimenting I used 4 of them and now have a straight neck and pretty low action with 11-49.
It wasn’t easy to find them for a reasonable price although, they seem to be out of production for long.
