I'm glad to see the Torquays, Laika & the Cosmonauts and the Treblemakers get mentioned before I could. I miss Zak. I was working with him for cover art for their 3rd album when some of the band went AWOL and put an end to their treblemaking. I have a CD of the album that never saw the light of day. I think it was titled Eclectic Ladyland, I could be wrong but it was very different in a psychedelic way from their previous albums and full of wonderful noises.

At least a few years ago you could find this on YouTube. I am not sure it was mixed properly.

SG101!

PS - Hunter, I'm with you re: a follow up from Bevel Emboss. You can imagine my heart flutter when I saw they still had an active website and front & center, bright red/bold print "NEWS 17 / 02 / 2015, New Album Coming up: A new album to be released in 2015!". Sadly, as best I can tell, that never happened.

Thanks for the recommendation.

All of the links on their website go to their Facebook page. There was a post earlier this month (Sept 2, 2023). See FB

One of my all time favourites, which I am surprised more people don't know of, is the Belgian 1990s band Les Vice Barons. "Steel Blue Moods" is probably their best - not every track is pure surf but I really don't care. I think back in the 90s a lot of what we called surf was fuzzier (in every sense) than it is today.
The Vice Barons also brought out a new album after a 20 year break, in 2022. I listened to it a few times on Bandcamp, but then a message appeared I couldn't listen any more until I pay 12 Euros for the download. This is a shame, as I would definitely buy it if it came out on vinyl, but am not keen on paying for downloads (which will stop working when the Zombie Apocalypse strikes). It would be great if Les Vice Barons reformed for some live shows - I would go along and buy some tangible merchandise off them.

The Apemen were another great high volume surf band from the 90s from nearby - Tilburg in the Netherlands.
I entirely agree about The Langhorns, Huntington Cads and Treblemakers - all three were/are great. But you beat me to it.

I really wish Bevel Emboss had a second record.

I just picked up Bongo King - Operation Latin Surf from a bunch of cheap, blind buys at Ferenc's table at SG101. It's cover art was terrible, I'd never heard a word about them, but it was the winner of the bunch!

There's not actually all that much bongo, but percussion is absolutely a highlight. There's a few songs featuring acoustic guitar that really stand out. "Wall of Death" lives up to its name.

The problem is I can't find ANY of it streaming. Not a song on youtube. They have a facebook page with 17 likes and no activity for years. Maybe Deep Eddy still has copies. If not, I think it deserves a reissue!

After seeing this, I sent a message to Bevel Emboss via Facebook and he doesn't have any copies for sale.

He did send this link

As far as a second album, he said he has songs written but budget and time are his constraints.

Ted from Deep Eddy doesn't have any more 'Bongo King' CDs and said he isn't in touch with the band members any longer.

However, he is headed to a record sale soon and said he'd look for a few copies (how ironic!). If you see them on his ebay, we'll know he found them.

One of my faviest 90s surf bands were Portland,OR's 'The Galaxy Trio'. Great playing and Jim Crabbe's guitar tone was fantastic! Jim moved to LA for a few years and we worked together at the Rhino Records store for a bit. He'd abandoned he surf style in favor of a more Tom Petty /American pop style by then , but the Galaxy Trio stuff was really inspiring ! I think he's back in Portland now??

Glad to see the participation - Thanks Y'all!

@Matthew, thanks for reaching out to folks re: Bevel Emboss & Ted/Deep Eddy! Cool to get turned onto 'new to me/you' music, WAAAYY cooler if you can actually still get it!

To keep some momentum going, I offer The Space Rangers - Ready to Take Off!

As I recall, Whorehay (Radio Free Bakersfield and formerly active member here) was hip to this album released in 2007 - playing a few cuts from these guys before they got much steam here and eventually playing at the 3rd SG101 convention in 2010 (@Gellert - as did your nomination of Ryan & the boys; Secret Samurai, and @chiba, Ivan & The Space Cossacks (Reunion) - check that link for some footage of them too!!).

The Space Rangers also made a return trip to the US the next year for several east coast gig's where I was fortunate to see them less than 30 minutes from home at the Instro Summit. Always a treat to hear traveling surf bands, more so when they've come from 1000's of miles away - from Germany in this case.

Their star shone bright but flickered into the past fairly quickly too. IIRC, Muck wrote a lot of the album inspired by his mother's passing (or to cope with?). They all seemed to go different directions after the couple of big-year's out.

Anyhow, Check them out.... again, or for the first time!

Digitally available for purchase on iTunes/Apple Music and Amazon Music

PS - Here's a nice walk down memory lane from Ivan's review of the album. And more 2010 SG101 Convention memories, photo's/links and whatnot here.

The Fathoms from Boston, Massachusetts. They had three great albums, 'Fathom This!', 'Fathomless', 'Overboard'.

The Penetrators - a very good debut, "the Kings of the High Speed Weekend", and an absolutely inspired second album, "Locked and Loaded".

Bless your heart, Ivan! The Penetrators absolutely need to be on this list of the absolute best surf music, and you adding them speaks volumes. Thank you very much! The Penetrators are the foundational bedrock of southern surf music and the very much still active Atlanta surf music scene.

I know they have a special place in your heart, Ivan. Here is blast from the past of you covering "The Southern Surf Syndicate Theme" and a '96 clip of the band in action from Ferenc "Frankiepoolboy" Dobronyi. Here is Ferenc's intro to the video from YouTube:

"The Penetrators surf music band hailed from Tuscaloosa, Alabama. They were one of the most popular and influential bands of surf music's "Third Wave", and released 2 CDs, a single, a live DVD and made numerous appearances on tribute and compilation CDs. It's a tragedy that guitarists and brothers, Spanky and Rip, died so young. In July of 1996, the quartet traveled to the Bay Area for a few shows including a live KFJC broadcast, a show at the infamous Purple Onion, and a show at the The Paradise Lounge. A VHS video of the Paradise just surfaced, and I'm going to put the whole set on YouTube. I encourage you to seek out The Penetrators music Enjoy."

I’ve mentioned them here before, The Galaxy Trio. Pretty much forgotten. They put a couple of good 45s and two 10”s on Estrus in the mid 90s. The EPS are some of my all time favorites in the genre.

Not as old but not well known, 7 Mares by Argentinian twangers Los Kahunas. This spring I picked up what was likely the last copy of this 10” in captivity. I believe the guy who ran the record label passed away recently.
