These albums are both so great that I'm hard pressed
to express a favorite. If forced to choose, I'd go with
"Interstellar Stomp" by an eyelash.
Thanks for putting this question out there. It was great
to go back to these CD's, and re-listen with a critical ear.
My god, what incredible music.
By the way, for those desperately in search of a copy,
Streetlight Records in San Jose, Ca. has a copy of
"Insterstellar Stomp". It's not cheap, but hey.............
this is an out-of-print classic.

I don't remember the production quality difference between them enough to comment, but regarding the song writing, I know that on TW I loved Apes of Wrath and Tsunami Tsurprise and on IS I liked most of the songs, songs, so I would say IS wins (even though those 2 songs on TW may be better than all of the ones on IS).
I think the Madeira are an improved evolution of the SC, with a drummer that fits the energy of the rest of the band.
And yes, Ferenc is the man, I don't know how much stuff I (and my bandmate Lee-Or) got from him, but it seemed like a lot.

I agree. The Madeira have a great vibe and the the music is really compelling. Sandstorm is a great album.

I have both CDs - autographed by a certain Ivan P. (thanks again, Ivan) The first time I heard Exolumina and The Defector on TW, I thought - Now, that's a different flavor of surf. So my vote leans toward TW. Spy Satellite and Solarus Stomp were two knockout tunes from IS.
I tried to get the tunes down on my trusty Mosrite.. anyway I could - thru my lick sampler, internet tabs (a rough one of The Defector was floating around a few years back) and watching the song's author play them. I like nailing tunes very few people know or play.
In another musical genre I like, I've learned and now play a tune called 'New York in November' by a French gypsy jazz guitarist named Dorado Schmidt - an absolutely beautiful melody. I don't think it is played too much (if at all) or even heard here in the states. Being a bit different in the tunes one plays to the guitars one plays does have it's rewards.
Rock (Surf) and Gypsy Jazz - if John Jorgenson can do it, why can't I?
My 2 cents..

I pretty much like anything Space Cossacks. For anybody that'd ask me about which Space Cossacks album to start with, I'd point 'em toward Never Mind The Bolsheviks, The Best Of... 'cause that compilation truly showcases all they were capable of. Then if they truly dig The Space Cossacks, they'd naturally gravitate toward Tsar Wars and Interstellar Stomp.
Since I only have Never Mind The Bolsheviks and Interstellar Stomp, I was likely a tad biased in my voting. I may have already cast my vote, but that don't mean I won't jump at the chance to buy Tsar Wars, should I happen to come across it, in the future.

So far the moral here seems to be that energy trumps elegance ...
Of course, what I did was run a quick check of which CD my favorites were on. I didn't carefully listen again to both CDs and then decide.

I just visited Amazon where there are 4 used copies of Interstellar Stomp ranging from $29 to $39. I'm starting to like Tsar Wars more.

You can still order the LP from Musick for $11, including postage.
