My worst mess-up occurred once and taught me well. I failed to tune up immediately before performing solo instrumental guitar. Never again. Not ever. I had tuned up earlier, but my guitar did a forgetaboutit. I immediately noticed and tried to smile anyway. I performed two songs on an acoustic-electric with nylon strings. To try to compensate I bent (stretched) the strings furiously as I played. This worked well with the uptempo Walk Don't Run, which sounded excellent and got much applause. I find that my band and I screw up a lot less if we just have fun! I try to see every gig as a chance to wow people with surf music...music they may think they know, but don't really. My current drummer is a very serious mechanical engineer. Once before a gig, a buddy of his came up and said, "I'll be watching you! Don't mess up!" Of course he screwed up like crazy and was really angry with himself at the break. I was really ticked that his friend was such a jerk! So I take it as my job to help him relax and create an atmosphere at practice and at gigs where finding joy is key. I think knowing we are all going to make mistakes, that we all have day jobs and that this whole endeavor is about surf musics should help us all keep the goal in mind. It's fun. Not perfection. Sometimes a little, sometimes a lot. I absolutely do not sweat over messing up as it is an inevitable part of playing live, especially when there is a lot of improv happening. Some of the coolest ideas have come from playing something other than what was maybe intended. We’ve changed song arrangements, and parts due to some cool mishaps. Heck, we even had to restart songs because of a train wreck. Just laugh it off and have fun…the audience is with us the whole time. Sometimes the most fun playing is how you recover from the flub. I mess up when I'm playing but that's the point of practicing before your gig. Just keep moving forward whether it's you that messed up or your bandmate. Everyone has moments where the stage lights are in your eyes, not enough light to see what fret your on, the heat or the cold made your guitar go out of tune, etc. Just have fun and keep playing. Every gig I mess up somewhere. Usually when I'm trying to move too much on stage, goofing around with the band or interacting with audience. I use to think the mistakes were huge because in my mind they sounded that way during the show. After recording a couple of shows and listening to what actually happened I found that I auto-corrected a lot quicker than I thought and most of them were not as bad as I heard in my head. Do I still have a significantly blown note sequence? Yes, but that's okay, the only people who really notice are other musicians... the rest of the audience usually doesn't. —Surf.The most dangerous of genres... Surfcat MARCH OF THE DEAD SURFERS!
