Almost everything Billy Childish has a hand in fits the bill for "really great 'garage' sounding recordings". I have a special spot in my heart for Thee Mighty Caesars as they're particularly aggressive:

The Gories were an exceptional garage punk band and all their records hit the mark:

Ditto The Oblivians:

This last one's specifically different. Though Guitar Wolf has some albums that sound like you could call them "garage", the album "Wolf Rock" has one of the gnarlier, murky, lo-fidelity sounds of any album I can think of. Whether or not you find it "listenable" is certainly dependent on your tolerance for that kind of thing:

Good luck nailing down the sound you're looking for!

Fixed that for you. Use the link provided when you click 'share' on the youtube video.

Well everyting from Estrus and Crypt records would be the ones to go with. The Mummies ofcourse, bue Crypt did some excelent releases of The Fireworks (garage withe a reverb drenched guitar), the classic Gories and Oblivans, The Devil Dogs, Jon Spencer Blues explosion, Lyres, New Bomb Turks, The Revelators, and of course the classic Back From The Grave series)

Not surf but a good bit of jangly guitar, solid melodic variety and plenty of surf-esq rolling/pounding/thundering vibe going on rhythmically this fantastic record by The Soft Pack (S/T 2010 debut as The Soft Pack after changing their name from The Muslims in the late 2000's).
IMHO, this is a great example of slightly modern take on the garage sound. Still listen regularly 13+ years later... whole thing holds up really, really well.
This should be the opening track C'mon but linked as the full album play list should you want more.
PS - if you want this with more garage, less polish, the stuff they released as the Muslims would be a great de-evolution. (Hmmm... DEVO!)

Like Goldenbirdies mentioned before Billy Childish with his countless projects is my favorite 'garage-artist'! Especially Thee Headcoates!

Ah, it's years since I heard that track. I think it was on a compilation tape made for me in about 1997 by a man from Birmingham (UK) known to me only as "surfy Mark". He never wrote a track listing so at various points over the last 25 years I have found out what the songs were called...

I'd be very interested to hear what other tracks were on that mixtape!

I'm not a big fan of when things get too lo-fi. Here are two great mid 60's examples of when the amount of lo-fi is just right.
Garage Punk
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z3SfLPREAcE
Surf/Hot Rod
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vWfmAZrJXdo
Note how the instruments on both recordings constantly competing for space which is a big part of the great overall sound. Although there are some cool sounding modern garage and surf recordings, nothing beats the magic of the original 60's production sound.

Love seeing Billy Childish mentioned here! I am a massive fan.
These fellows caught my ear recently on KEXP, they have a nice retro sound:
