Hello Surf addicts,
After 20 years of absence the "surf fever"hit me again. I used to play in a Rockabilly Surf Roots kind of band and back then I played a Silverface Fender Twin Reverb or Super Reverb from the early seventies with a Brian Setzer 6120 SSU or a MIJ Fender Telecaster with a Bigsby with very good results. Sometimes things unfortunally are happening in life so I had to sold most of that gear. Nowadays I play a Victory V40 deluxe with a USA Strat plus with fender custom shop 54 pickups. from the early nineties and yesterday I received the Surfybear Metal Mk2 today and my first impressions are overwhelming but very positive, a lot of drip/splash. The reverb on the Victory is very pleasant but it lacks drip/splash and that's why I ordered a Surfybear. I used the Digitech Polara in the past with mixed feelings but it gets the job done. Now I want a Jazzmaster guitar because I love the more woody warmer tones it produces.
What is your opinions about the Squier Classic vibe or 40th anniversary Jazzmasters series in general? Are they a hit or a miss? I know there are some QC issues with them but I know my way around with adjusting guitars in general. Is the tremolo system on them working smoothly because that is important for me? Thanks in advance !

I have a Squire CV Jaguar and really happy with it! Tremolo arm became a little loose after heavy half year studio usage and I have replaced it with Staytrem. That’s the only issue I could find till now.

I have three CV squiers that I use for gigs/practice across two different bands. The wood is solid. If you know how to upgrade/adjust guitars and don't mind sinking in a few extra dollars, you'll end up with something you really dig.
If you're going to buy one, buy it in-person if you can so you can get a really good look at it/play it. Based on my experience:
-I think that all three of mine needed fretwork.
-One of mine, the nut was too tall and needed work.
-One of mine, the finish on the back of the neck got sticky as I played and needed to be sanded down. The other two are fine.
-A friend's CV mustang has incorrect drilling on the neck pocket/neck. The neckplate is slightly crooked.

I love my Squier J Mascis Jazzmaster. Ditched the gold pickguard for an off-white one and that’s the only mod I’ve done. Plays well, stays in tune, sounds good. What’s not to like?

Thanks everybody,
I'll take the plunge so I will order a Squier Jazzmaster 40th anniversary because of the aesthetics. Here in the south of Holland there are no music stores anymore that sell these Squiers. Music stores in general are dissapearing slowly here. When it requiers too much fretwork I'll sent it back and order another one. Prices for Mexican/USA models are going through the roof in our country. €200 for additional hardware is doable. Tha's something I have to try out myself.
I like the surfybear metal MK2 very much. It's insane how close you can get to mimic that Classic surf sound without spending a fortune for a secondhand original 6G15 tank. I used to use a Digitech Polara pedal the last year or so but this is the real deal, it does the job but you can't compare them. I'm becoming a happy surfer again

I think you may drive 1 hour to Music Store in Koln and choose there whatever you want, as I did last year)

Yes that's true. Let's see if they have them on stock.

Thomann is a great option when you know what you want but surely to try personally is much better. You may send it back although if something is wrong. I have 3 guitars from Thomann and they are great. I think Thomann also got offline shop, but I got two guitars in Music Store in Köln, both times not the model I originally intended to get, so that also makes sense to play them and compare side to side and then you may find something really interesting and suitable for you. This store is huge and I think had on spot AlL the Fenders and Squires form current line plus some old models and B stock. So I would surely prefer to go, try and choose when I have possibility.

OP already said they were ordering it, I was just asking if they were ordering it from Thomann.
And I agree to an extent - but the counterpoint is that big box stores are usually easier to return to if you find a problem after a few days. At least in the UK, there is an explicit guaranteed-right-to-return under law for mail order, but not for purchasing in store.
Yes, in Germany also.

+1 for the Squier CV or anniversary Jazzmaster. They are great guitars (mine is one of the best Fenders I’ve ever owned) and if you can find a nice lightweight one all the better. I think they benefit from replacing the tailpiece with an AVRI unit, but I don’t think that’s a required swap right out of the gate. I leave everything else as is. I really like the pickups in mine as well.
