Permalink non-standard song structures?

New Topic

Anyone know any surf artists who write songs that use unconventional song structures? Artists who aren't just using Wipe Out as a song structure template?

Example: The Family Dollar Pharaohs were active in the early/mid 90s where I live. Some of their songs were somewhat conventional, but there's lots of nontraditional, almost linear song structure in the album this song is from:

I guess you just need to listen to Mermen, Pollo del Mar or El Ray for example

Also check out Laika and the Cosmonauts. The longer they went the further they strayed from surf music, but a lot of it is still really interesting.

I think surf is wide open for outside the box chord structures. The very kernels of the genre were not I-IV-Vs. Mr. Moto and Miserlou opened the door for all the creativity that followed.

Mr. Moro is a composition I truly admire. When you consider how young Paul Johnson was when he wrote it, that speaks well of his understanding and imagination.

I don’t know if it will ever see the light of day, but I’ve been working on an instrumental with some crazy chord changes. Think in terms of Steely Dan Visits the Beach. I wouldn’t call it down-the-centerline Surf, but it definitely has a Surf flavor. It starts in F Lydian mode, goes to Ab Lydian, where upon it follows with a series of altered dominants that appear to lead to the key of C, but it never actually goes to C; it returns to an F Maj7 Aug 4. It’s a strange sound, and definitely along the lines of Steely Dan chord changes, but played with Surf reverb, it sounds like some very far-out Surf.

When Surf Guitar is outlawed only outlaws will play Surf Guitar.

Check out our band Agent Octopus, especially Silver Surfer: Redemption which I basically wrote with a classical feel with several sections, including a cello. Silver Surfer: Redemption - Bandcamp

Also Angle of Attack by my former band Reverb Galaxy. Again, a bit of outside of the box playing. See link below.

We do our best to avoid standard surf progressions 1-4-5 major/7th (e.g., E - A - B based chords) arrangements and
bridges with 6th minor, 5 major, 4 major - 3 major, like in Pipeline

Other bands outside the box are:
Jim & the SeaDragons
Some Aqualads like Aqualads - Treasures
The Penetrators, Shoot the Pier
