Where is U.S. America

We were talking and I mentioned I was from Washington ... the state. Befuddlded, they asked me where that was ... then, one blonde, tanned girl said, "Oh, I know. It's north. But does it go Oregon, then Washington?" And these were kids from a very privileged family, in the richest state, with a very good educational system. They just didn't give a shit.<p>Another time, I mentioned Nova Scotia to some 20-somethings. "What country is that?" They asked.<p>Not being familiar with our own country or our neighbors (whether Mexico or Canada) seems to me a sad indictment of how Americans value (or rather, devalue) general education as an important life achievement. While I agree with your views on the whole "young people" thing, I do have to point out that California has been in the bottom 5 of the 50 states in education for over fifteen years in a row. So while Pacific Palisades is a privelidged town, and there's a decent chance the kids went to private school, California is really a state with the wealth of an independent nation, and the education system of a third world country. ~B~ Top
