Hey, guys. Long time ago 2012 I bought a Squire Cyclone I, on eBay for 125 usd. Wasn't a pure surf machine cuz of a very muddy humbacker on a bridge. Neck single coil was more or less fine. Lately decided to change the pickups to Mosrite clone once (Klone parts - Barcelona), and it finally began to sound like a way better as for me. Sometimes beats even my fender mustang. If you are interested in a small short demo here u go

Nice job! I had one of those Cyclones (same color even), and spent a lot of time changing pickups and wiring. At one point, I put a Mosrite type pickup in the bridge (an M3 pickup) - I liked the sound, but felt it was just too hot. I did really like the neck pickup.
But in the end, I never really bonded with the guitar (a bit too heavy, and I wasn't a fan of the big frets or the strat style trem), so I sold it.

Oh great to hear that I’m not the only one who placed Mosrite style pickups into that guitar by the way pickups costs more then guitar itself in my case but I’m totally happy with this result. Mustang/Strat/Mosrite mix in one guitar

Scale is 1/4" from a Mosrite too, I think? That's a great way to do it on a budget!
That was an idea, cuz didn’t want to sell this one, but couldn’t play on it either so Mosrite kinda update where a best solution ;)

I picked up a pair of Squier Paranormal Cyclones last year. One white with red tortoise guard like the '65 white-with-red-tortoise-guard Mustang I grew up with, and another Candy Apple Red with white perloid guard. Mustang body and control plate/controls, 3 Strat pickups and vibrato, 24-3/4" scale length (Gibson style), and Jaguar-looking slide-switch panel that just turns each pickup on and off. Mine were very inexpensive and well made.
These things surf very nicely, and also make a great, cheap slide guitar. So the white one is set up for slide, the CAR one set up for surf with heavy strings. I know hardly anybody here cares about slide guitar, but I've been doing that since the 60s, ever since hearing/seeing Johnny Winter, who slung a white-with-red-tortoise-guard Mustang on his first Columbia album.
To me, these blow away any Mustang I've had, including my old one (which is long gone). Scale length better than the 24" Mustang/Jaguar scale, to my tastes; the vibrato stays reasonably well in-tune; neck and body feel good. Those Mustang vibratos are tortuous.
One thing I might do is replace the on-off slide switches with on-off-on slide switches to get true out-of-phase combinations like you can on a Mustang. A Jaguar-style bright switch might also be cool. These were so inexpensive, I wouldn't feel bad about messing with or even drilling holes in them.

For me it was more an experiment, wanted true Mosrite pickups sound but with Mustang/Musicmaster body and strat tremolo and Gibson scale. Weirdest mix you can imagine, but I am in love with the result and as I said the pickups and work costed me 3 times more then a guitar itself, bought on an eBay for 125 dollars
Now my working set up looks like this. Not too classic mustang mood
