JohnRio, good stuff, nice tone. It will be interesting to hear your new compositions, how your sound has developed over the years!

Very nice. To my ears, the sound is exotic, almost middle eastern. While Surf developed in Southern California, other cultures have far more experience with minor key music and I truly enjoy Surf music from Eastern Europe and the Balkans.

Thank you, minor key I'd say takes a huge part in Ukrainian music, and somehow culturally it got inside our surf vision at least we have 2 seas where u can actually surf in a stormy weather. But It's cold cold sea, haha. So instead of beach, sun, and girls. It's fighting the nature in very warm swimming suit

I have loved minor key music for a long time. I find it interesting to play harmonic, melodic and Hungarian minors, not to mention the fact that there are other minor keys, from various geographic locations. I would love to know the history of how these scales developed. They seem to have strong roots in the Mideast, so it’s possible that we are listening to music that uses scales which were employed thousands of years ago, on the eastern shores of the Mediterranean, but are there deeper roots, perhaps going back to ancient Egypt? Who knows? But I find it intriguing that melodies we play in contemporary Surf might be relatable to someone who had lived thousands of years ago.
I know that we have members here of Balkan origin, and I find their music quite enjoyable. As I am learning, the Ukraine has some very interesting music. In my own playing, I find Major key music to be deliberate and relatively smooth going, like climbing evenly spaced stairs. On the other hand, the harmonic minors I love so much, feel more like rock climbing; clinging to an uneven surface and holding on for dear life. The Hungarian minor is even more treacherous, while the melodic minor sounds like it can’t decide if it’s a Major key trying to sound like a minor, or vice versa. Just those three minor keys will take you a long way.

I think that for sure the roots of what we are here Surf playing are from mideast and historical goes thru ages and centuries into past. And about some UA music and minor key, u can hear some here, its Ukrainian national instrument https://youtu.be/iE0cSyPtogg
And even jewish Hava Nagila has more or less Ukranian origin, cuz written there by hassidic community what has Ukie origin by itself, and culturally very similar to some UA music.
