Permalink Finding the elusive surf drum beat

Hey, I’m a guitar player, ok? I don’t speak drum. We want to do some surf songs and the percussionist asked me what she should listen to as an example. She is not playing an American drum kit, so we are translating it to her selection of doumbeks, conga, etc.

While I am sure there are dozens of examples of great surf beat drumming, what is the ONE definitive recording you would recommend as an example of the textbook surf beat?

Walk Don't Run is good; got a little swing beat during bridge.

You really can't define the thing with a single song--there's too much variety even in this fairly narrow genre.

For best results, strap drummer to chair and force drummer to listen to multiple surf compilations, as found on youtube, for example.

Here's a great single song start. This whole album would be a good primer:

Here's another tack. Have her listen to these surf versions of a song she's already familiar with, if I'm interpreting your signature link right.

And note how different they all are!

Female beat (two snare hits on 1, one snare hit on 3) and lotsa rattataty fills.

When it comes to early surf, Dick Dale always has the answer. It's even in the name of the song. Big Grin

Here's Dusty Watson demonstrating how to do it.

Mahaloz for the suggestions, everybody!
