Hi all,
I've just finished The Leak, a new song I wrote and recorded at home.
It's available on Spotify and Apple Music and a bunch more places I've never heard of. Let me know what you think.

Well done! Very atmospheric and melodic

Yes, sounds good indeed! What is the "plopping" sound I hear during the second phase of the song, when the actual melody begins? Just being curious. Perhaps bring the lead a little more to the foreground next time? Keep up the good work! Be very interested in what you will bring in the future Smile

Thanks, guys. I appreciate it. @Jojobaplant: All the sounds here are guitars and bass, so I'm guessing the plopping you hear is reverb (or another effect). I can get more specific if you give me a time stamp for the particular part you're talking about.

The popping mentioned sounds like the kick to me.

It starts after you play the opening chords and then move on to the melody. It then continues every time you play a riff. In other words, all through the tune every time right at the start of your riff. Might be the reverb indeed or the moment your pick hits the string, not sure. At first I was the only one hearing that, but given the reactions, others hear it too. Not a big deal and it doesn't diminish your melody or tune, it was just sth I noticed.

Could be the kick too, like Joel says.

Yes, in headphones there’s clearly some popping sound like clipping or overload

Good job! I really like the atmosphere it sets. What drum machine did you use? It sounds like the EZ Drummer Blues kit. For the plopping, I also think it is the attack of the pick. Probably will be fixed with a bit of EQ. I think it will benefit even more from a better mix. Kudos overall, keep it up!

I think the popping/plopping/etc. you're hearing is pick attack. I recorded that lead part using a 1958 Silvertone/Danelectro U1 through a Danelectro slapback echo and (if I remember correctly) a TCE Skysurfer pedal on its "spring" setting. So a there's a lot of single-coil twang. And I'm picking those notes in a fairly staccato way. There's no clipping or overload, I don't think. Just a lot of reverb pop.

The drums are from drum-drops.com.

Thanks for the feedback, all.

That makes sense and I kinda figured that, especially because it's at the start of each riff, so the moment your pick hits the string. In all, keep up the good work and keep me and my fellow instrumentalists (deliberately not saying "surfists" because I don't really consider myself a full surf instrumental artist) posted on your progress and any new recording! Ping me when you need some help with this or that, I'll be happy to help you. Two tips from one one-man band to another: raise the level of the lead a bit to make the melody a bit more outspoken and experiment a little with adding a rhythm guitar part to it. If you don't like rhythm guitar, don't - just adding a little of my personal preference in the mix Smile If you listen to any Magnatech recording, you hear that there's always a supporting instrument next to the bass and lead. Just a tip and again, keep up the good work!

Cheers from Dublin.
