I have had that Dracula Ye-Ye video on my favorites list for a year now! I love it! And I also love the Ventures, from the moment I bought Live In Japan 65 on a whim nine years ago. I've found that they have a long lasting, if somewhat burried influence on American music. Most of the surf/instro bands I see here in NY cover at least a few Ventures tunes. What I'd love to hear is more of the REALLY deep cuts, like "Vibrations" or "The Creeper" . What I find most amazing about the Ventures is the apparently ENORMOUS influence they have had on Japanese music and Japanese culture in general. I can't list all their hits - both instrumentals and Ventures originals with Japanese lyrics - there but dig this info: Right now, on the third floor of the Tokyo Intercontinental Hotel, there is a Ventures themed beer garden featuring a menu made up like V's album cover and screens playing their various Japanese concert films. There was a prize winning novel and subsequent film and stage adaptations ("Seishen Dendekedekedeke") about growing up in Japan in the mid-60s. The central theme the main character's obsession with the Ventures and their version of Pipeline. They have toured the country every summer, from small towns to big cities, for the LAST 45 YEARS. Ginza Lights, with music written by the Ventures, was voted the all-time favorite karaoke song in Japan. |
