What are some of the surf bands or songs that feature the Fender Bass VI?
I feel like I’ve heard it in quite a few but not sure…

I think the bass player of the Space Agency plays one — |

Not necessarily "surf", but try... The Shadows - Stingray The Spiratones - Instro/Surf from the rain-soaked north-northwest of England |

Definitely not surf, but the singer/bassist of The Church used one for a long time, and I know the people in The Cure did as well. Wanda Jackson's album The Party Ain't Over has a lot of Bass VI on it as well - her stuff is more rockabilly than surf and I avoided it for a long time because I'm not really a Jack White fan, but the album is fantastic. Whenever I'm feeling the urge to listen to some Bass VI in any genre, I go to this page and start clicking: https://www.reddit.com/r/BassVI/comments/35sn80/very_long_list_of_tunes_that_feature_bass_vi_with/ —-- |

Eric Foster of the Boss Martians uses one. I think the bass used in the Space Agency is actually a baritone Jaguar that might or might not be tuned down. |

Sebastian of the Hydrosonics also used one, with very heavy strings though. |

That Supertones cut is great. Some interesting Bass-Sixery about 2:20 in this clip. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h7ddO8iPPaw —The artist formerly known as: Synchro When Surf Guitar is outlawed only outlaws will play Surf Guitar. |

That is correct. I’m also not sure if it is tuned down or not. I’ll try and remember to ask them next time I see them (or Simon might answer here, if he sees this thread). I recall that Hiromi did briefly have a Squier VI around the time they were launched, but didn’t keep it, as she found the slightly longer scale length a bit awkward. She has small hands! — |

Circa 20 years ago, there was the Jaguar Baritone Custom, which was a great sounding instrument. Basically, it was a Jaguar with a 28.5” scale. They came tuned E-E, just like a VI, but the slightly shorter scale made the low E quite easy to bend sharp, which was my only complaint about the instrument. Mel Waldorf had one, and I started a long-running thread at the Fender Discussion Pages called The Loyal Order of the Big Cat which had quite a bunch of us owners enthusiastically sharing our adventures in the low bass range. —The artist formerly known as: Synchro When Surf Guitar is outlawed only outlaws will play Surf Guitar. |

The Jaguar Baritone Custom had an excellent timbre. If they had only gone with a 30” scale, I believe it would have been a much more successful product. They worked great for B-B tuning, but I’ve never seen the point of buying another instrument, just to pick up a fourth of range. For me, it’s E-E, or nuttin’. —The artist formerly known as: Synchro When Surf Guitar is outlawed only outlaws will play Surf Guitar. |
