Permalink Any tips on how to get more sci fi sounding leads?

Looking to see if anyone has any advice on how to achieve those more outer space sounding style leads and rhythm parts displayed on The man or astroman albums and alot of the more contemporary sci fi stuff. Really just been going off ear and what sounds a little kooky but if anyone has any techniques they find work especially well would really love some viewpoints.

If it's just for recording, Garageband and Logic Pro have tons of built-in sound effects and filters you can explore for days. They all have adjustable parameters further increasing the possibilities. I can't speak to the other DAWs but I'm sure they must have things as well.

Honestly im working on logic and didnt even think about experimenting with some of the other plugins I have for other music. Might be worth a try playing with a few tools next track.

I like to use some space delay for this.

Appreciate that have been messing with some delays but I’m gonna go a little further tonight

On Logic go to Reverbs>Space Designer>Warped Effects

I think ill get a bit more familiar with what all these plugins can do to my guitar this week. A bit of a guessing game but alot of fun

For pedal effects I suggest these 2.
The Obscura delay is like no other I have used. Probably the spaciest delay i have ever played.
It's discontinued. Worth every cent.

The Afterneath is a reverb delay of sorts and hard to explain because it is other worldly. Not sure it's worth the cost.

Used together or with stacked other spring reverb drips makes space travel.

That Afterneath seems to be a great way to create those effects in a live setting.

Fuckk i can really see myself tracking down an obscura

Ive been having luck with the ringshifter on Logic Pro X to get that effect I was looking for somewhere in between a raygun war and an alien ship crashing.

All spacey and organ-like tones on Insanitizers' "Reverb Rockets" and "Space Force" albums were made with the Roland VG-8 guitar effects pedal. This is not MIDI. It requires a Roland six-pole pickup on the guitar. The tones are musical, clear and have complex (rather than simple) textures. This large pedal also includes reverb, delay and overdrive effects.

On the "Reverb Rockets" album these recordings used Roland VG-8 tones: Spacewalk, Exotic Planet Charm, The Arrival of Doctor Space, Fright Night.

On the "Space Force" album these recordings used it: Space Carnival, Ray Gun Ranger, Space Trip, The Challenge.

You can hear these albums at Insanitizers.Bandcamp.com, Insanitizers.com, Spotify, Pandora, Deezer, Youtube, etc.

Here's a photo of my Roland VG8 "pedal." The case is steel, 20 inches side-to-side, 12 inches up-to-down and about 15 pounds heavy. I installed an optional "Version 2 software upgrade." I have brought it to gigs. Although it prominently displays "TUNER" function it has no tuner. Getting the tones I used took much trial-and-error.

Theres definitely a couple of these I am becoming very interested in currently trying to rally some friends together to work on a project so its not just me and a thousand layers of my guitar. Used to be an active member on here in 2016 and took a long break happy to see its still helpful as ever.

"There's nothing much like it really, this one is decidedly different.." --Pipeline Instrumental Review Magazine Summer 2023 reviewing Insanitizers' album "Reverb Rockets." These comments reflect my use of the VG8 pedal shown above on most of the leads in this album.

IN other words, until you've heard this album you haven't heard anything like it. Alan Taylor also mentions, "bargain price..very full sound...a touch of Sweden's Spotniks...massive echo...crashes along vibrantly...builds and builds...unsettling...storms in...punchy beat...spooky."

Bargain price? My best price is for combined purchase of Insanitizers Reverb Rockets CD with the 2023 CD album Insane Knot Tie Soars. Just inquire to Insanitizers@gmail.com and please mention the country to ship to for a friendly bargain.
