And Bob can now say he has a cameraman credit on a rock video I was 5 when the song came out, but was properly schooled by my older brothers in the rock arts, so I was always aware of it. I have a reverence for it, like every time I hear it, I have to listen to it all the way through. It's mystical and foreign. Once I found the Yardbirds, I dug deep into that, and was less of a fan of the more prog Beck, especially into the middle 80s. Obviously, his playing with the Yardbirds is much more accessible to someone learning how to play. That said, I did try to see Beck every chance I could and have probably seen him at least 10+ times. Anyway, as a guitar player, there is something untouchable about Beck. No one (period) No one will ever be able to play like him, so why bother trying? You will never get it right, and it's a risk playing a song by a master because the comparisons will never be favorable. After his untimely death, the Pollos decided to give Bolero a shot. If we don't play it perfectly, at least we do it with love. And just to be clear, the audio in the video is the studio recording not the live mix. Clearly Jono's Strat does not sound like a 12 string and the tambourine player didn't show up. There are lots of videos posted now from the SG101 Fest of us playing Bolero live, if you want to check those out. Finally, there was a time on the surf message boards when someone would be ridiculed for doing a Beck cover, and I am happy to see that we have moved on from that attitude.
