Permalink SD Antiquity vs. AV Jazzmaster pickups

New Topic

I've heard a lot of positive feedback from people who have switched out their stock Jazzmaster pickups with one of the SD Antiquity flavors. However, I'm interested in a comparison of these pickups vs. those that come in the American Vintage '62 Reissue Jazzmasters? I'm not blown away by the tone of the AV pickups and would be interested in swapping them out if there is something much fatter and closer to the originals out there. For those that favor the Antiquity's, any preference between the I & II models? Any insight would be much appreciated.

i have antiquity II's in my CIJ. i have not played an AV reissue but i did get a chance to play a vintage 60 or 61 that a guy i work with brought in. we were trying to compare them to see how good the SD antiquity II's really are. we were both pretty impressed by how similar they were. they were not exact, but overall, sonically they were 90% there. the SD's were a little fatter and smoother. the vintage pickups were a tad brighter. i love the SD's but the only thing i have been able to compare them to is those originals and the CIJ stock pickups, which were really goofy sounding once i finally got the antiquitys. i hope this helps in some way. i know it isnt really what you were asking though. I managed to get vintage pickups for the price of antiquities. So vintage is always an option.

I have never tried the antiquity PU's but I do have a set of SD Jazzmaster replacements. I find no advantage over my AVRI stock pickups. I mod the Vol and tone circuits to make the treble somewhat less harsh by reducing the pot values to 500k from 1 meg.

Just for the crap of it last week, I dropped a set of AVRI Jauguar PU's into AVRI Jazzmaster #2. We played a show last Saturday night and all the guys in the band were impressed with the sound of that guitar through my '65 Dual Showman head and 1-15 Tone Ring cab. I noticed that the lead pickup when cranked up sounded much more like a trumpet when double picked.

We are playing tomorrow in Macon with Gein and the Grave Robbers, I'll use #2 again and see if I still like the sound.

The installation of the Jaguar Pickup under the Jazzmaster pickup cover is a time consuming project, but it may be worth it in the long run.....more to come....ed

Traditional........speak softly and play through a big blonde amp. Did I mention that I still like big blonde amps?

I have had both ... the SDs Antiquity II in my 65 Jazzmaster (it didnt come with original pickups) and the AVRI in my custom Jazzmaster. I like the tone of my AVRIs as much, if not more. But, that may have as much to do with the set up and electronics - not an apples-to-apples comparison, as the two guitars are very different. I thought very highly of the SDs; they were a bit darker and perhaps a little less defined in the treble than the AVRIs. I think they gave a more even tone across the playing spectrum, but they were not as hot as the AVRIs. To each his own, but I find the AVRIs to be more to my liking...

At one point I had a MIJ JM with Antiquity I's and an AVRI JM. IIRC the MIJ sounded darker, fatter and more mid. The Antiquity I's impedance was quite a bit higher. Later I got Antiquity II for the MIJ JM and it sounded more like the AVRI though still not as bright.

Matter is just energy waiting to happen.

Thanks for the feedback guys.

I thought I'd resurrect this old thread on Jazzmaster pickups. The Duncan site currently has a number of Jazzmaster pickups, but there are three that I'd like to understand better. The Vintage for Jazzmaster® SJM-1, Antiquity II™ for Jazzmaster® (11034-35 & 36) and Antiquity for Jazzmaster® (11034-31 & 32) are appear to be efforts to recreate a classic Jazzmaster tone. The specs listed all seem very similar. Has anyone had a chance to compare these pickups to each other and to a vintage jazzmaster or AVRI?

Thanks in advance.

Id love to hear a shootout between the Duncan, Novak and Lollar vintage Jazzmaster pickups. I have heard that the 50s JMs have more turns of wire than the 60s models. Lollars is based on a 1961 (I think), Novak on a 1963 and Duncan on a mid 60s.

I had the AVRI in my thin skin and got a set of Vintage Novaks and prefer the tone of the Novaks, but I do miss the punch of the Fenders. I am not sure you can have it all though as the Fenders have longer magnets than the more vintage correct models.

I am waiting for Novak to finish his vacation so I can ask an expert about how adding more turns of wire (increased ohms) will affect the tone and punch. The Novaks vintage speck is approximately 6.9 ohms neck and about 7.7 ohms bridge. I really like the neck, but would like to know if more wraps on the bridge would add punch or just tame the treble a bit. He is pushing the JP-90 for the bridge to solve my punch problem.

I know Lollar is 8.4 neck and 8.8 bridge while Duncan is 8.3 for both, but I dont know about the sound or feel.

I swapped AVRI's for SD Vintage JM-1 version pickups. I do like the SD's much better. The Vintage JM-1's are suppose to be like 50's era JM pickups. I note a more classic, full JM tone, a little more mid-range honk. The AVRI's seemed a little too bright for my liking (I do like a darker sound) and did not have much character IMHO. I have had the SD's in for about a year and continue to be happy with the pickups.
