Allow me to introduce myself! I’m Ken Holewczynski of House of Tabu, know for it’s quarterly full-color magazine, Exotica Moderne and also for the Tiki mugs and glassware we produce.
As we’ve featured surf and exotica reviews in the magazine from the very beginning, our next progression is the formation of boutique record label.
As spin off of House of Tabu, we’re launching Tabu Recordings with a focus on garage, surf and lo-fi - all on glorious vinyl! Spinning the right soundtrack is the musical key to any good Tiki bar, hip scene or even your living room.
Last year, we released a 7” flexi disc single from our hometown’s raging surf band, The Tentakills. After their successful single, we began planning to release their first full length LP in the upcoming year. The Tentakill’s “Rage Of Aquarius” LP showcases the band’s original tracks with their unique sound and signature take of surf. Rage of Aquarius features 11 tracks and will be pressed on sea glass green vinyl.
We’re beyond excited to also work with unarguably the Midwest’s (and beyond) greatest surf band, The Madeira. Known for their fast and furious style of surf, The Madeira culled the best of their previous releases to create the album “Archipelago: The Best of The Madeira”. At times credited with being at the forefront of the surf revival, The Madeira paved a path, playing their own sound while staying true to surf’s beginnings.
We’ve partnered with The Madeira’s long-time label, Double Crown Records and the album will contain 12 tracks selected by the band themselves. Archipelago will be pressed on gold vinyl with special 50 copies on red vinyl, as an exclusive to Double Crown.
Later in 2023, Tabu Recordings will have follow up album releases to include the “electro-trash” project by the mysterious band, Test Subject 17, with their sound that electrifies the mashing up garage, electronics and surf.
Capping off the line up is a new project, The Lords of Atlantis. The Lords features Madeira members, Ivan Pongracic on guitar and Dane Carter on drums, Jonpaul Black of Tikiyaki Orchestra on bass and Jeremy DeHart of Aqualads on rhythm guitar.
All Tabu Recording releases will be pressed in the USA in Chicago, Illinois at Smashed Plastic.
Watch for further announcements and we will be offering pre-sales in the near future. While vinyl production can take up to 9 months, all presale purchases will have a digital download so you can enjoy the bands immediately!
