Permalink Surf Slide Guitar???

New Topic

I hve been listening to The Impacts album "Wipe Out" (that sounds nothing like the Safari's tune) and notice through the whole album heaps of slide guitars a main melody or part. I have never heard of slide guitar in instrumentel/surf stuff except for Santo and Johnny. Has anyone else noticed this snd was it part of their sound? It certainly sets them apart.
Any other surf music that featured this style?

Philjudd, yeah the Impacts used a steel guitar. I never really even thought about that aspect of their sound until I was reading about them fairly recently and it was mentioned. Very cool to learn about the occasional quirkiness of the original bands.

This popped up in my YouTube feed. Deke Dickerson (Untamed Youth) playing "Gutterball" with Garret Immel (Ghastly Ones) on bass, Pete Curry (Halibuts, Los Straitjackets) on drums, and Chris Sprague (Big Sandy) on 2nd guitar.

That sounds great. Thanks for sharing...

A couple of good surf slide tunes from Messer Chups:

This song works perfect across on the slide/lap steel...

I was originally thinking bottleneck slide. But there a heap of great lap and pedal steel versions of surf tunes.

Some more classic tunes you hear in surf bands repertoire on lap steel.

Love this Beach Boys song. It is just as good as an instrumental!

Steel Pier by The Impacts

Jeff(bigtikidude)

A few Sleepwalks by Santo and Johnny. Plus the original live. Their version almost sounds like the inspiration for Lbotross...similar rythmn feel with the backing...

And finally a bottleneck version of a well known instrumental or surf tune..

A bit of Walk Don't Run...love these tunes on lap steel...they really work well..

The third video has some great improvising...

And something pretty novel I came across in listening yo surf slide tunes.

Not surf but the instrument is one I have never seen before!

Wow...love this...it would have pretty unique foe the era..

This guys music is incredible. Not surf...but truly inspiring.

Read his story as pretty amazing. And he uses a lot of homemade instrument.

His version of Albotross...

Everyone here is likely familiar with Laika and the Cosmonaut’s ‘Fadeaway’. They did an alternate version that as far as I know is only available on the obscure surf compilation below (I could not find a clip). It is identical to the album release - it is probably the same recording - except they added slide to the chorus. It really adds something to the already outstanding song.

Thanks. I must hunt that out!

We recorded a steel player (Brad Conrad) on Saucers in the Sunset and Luger 3, and I played lap steel on Old Caliente, Showdown at Sunset.
