Jeff(bigtikidude)

show was kinda short but super packed for a little horror Book/movie store.

Keyboards were a tad burried, but it worked out ok over all.

Was about 80 people there.
besides Baja Marty and Ran and myself the only other people there I knew were Lee Josephs of Dionysus records, and Jake of the Bomboras/Lords of Altamont.

where were all the surf fans?

Jeff(bigtikidude)

Do the Ghastlys normally get a good turnout from the surf crowd?

Not really.
when the Verbtones played with them last summer at Safari Sams,
with Lords of Altamont and a few other bands the
place had about 250 people, and I'd say the
surf crowd (people that I know/see on a regular basis at other surf shows)
was about 20 ish.

I think some of the surf crowd doesn't know about them.
and some of the older surf fans might be scared of them.
really dunno, its a shame as they are soooo good live.

they played Black Sand Beach with out rehearsing it, and
and Atomic Robot( I believe its called) for the 1st time.
last night. we were so stoked.

I love Black Sand Beach. I would have loved to be there.

Whether or not the Ghastlys have the surf crowd there or not the fact remains that they are drawing a non-surf crowd which is fantastic and is that best thing that can happen to surf music.

Yeah that was a good show...
Now to answer Jake's question - I'll try to do it diplomatically without offending anyone.
1. The "surf crowd" is not such a big crowd.
2. The Ghastly Ones bring in the under-40-year-olds from the surf crowd.
3. They also bring in other people from other generes.
4. It seems that the "Surf Crowd" we refer to will not go see a lot of good bands - Satan's Pilgrims, Ghastly Ones, The Volcanics, The Bomboras, Deke Dickerson and his various projects, etc. The reasons (or excuses) vary.
It's their loss...

Ran

The Scimitars

sigh......................
makes me bang my head on the wall.

what ever is wrong with some people.

that's my not trying to not offend people.

Some people love their families too much... which I can envy. Other people don't feel safe in certain areas. Then some people are really really nazis when it comes to their surf rock and other forms of music.

But please, come out to see The 'Verb from Sept 3rd to Sept 16th. We've got mace for everyone, we've got extra families, we are well mannered, we are very presentable, and we play some good music while putting on a decent show.

I can vouch for that, the 'Verb are really good live.

I wish the surf scene was bigger up here. Er, I wish there WAS a surf scene up here. I have an ad in craigslist to start a band up and I've gotten one weak reply from a drummer. Everyone wants to play and hear other stuff I suppose. C'est la vie

In a way lack of a surf scene works out better for us. Granted we wish there were more bands than us and Django Twango, but the scene isn't over saturated which works out for us. Granted I think we are good enough and unique enough to do alright in a packed surf scene I don't know if I'd risk the chance sight unseen.

Also, I'd rather have a crowd of people dancing who have no idea what surf music is than a couple of guys into surf standing with their arms crossed. For a good portion of 'verb fans the question isn't whether or not to pomp their hair, it is how high should they make their pomp today.

How did this become a thread for promoting a 'Verb tour?...No offense meant Jake, but at least put this smiley before the plug:

The Scimitars

I don't do smileys even if it causes my intentions to be horribly perverted.

I hope it was taken as a joke as I said we have extras families and mace for people, which we aren't actually going to bring to coax the surf crowd out. I was going on an extension of the why people don't come to shows.

I think that might have a lot to do with the bands most of those groups usually share bills with - it seems like the more non-surf bands playing a show, the less likely that "surf crowd" is to go.

Playing Devil's advocate, though, I don't think the Ghastly Ones really need to cater to that crowd - they were on a major label, and they draw better than most instro bands. Along similar lines, Jeff mentioned something once about some of the guests on one of the Ventures cruises thinking that Los Straitjackets were too "out there." That says a lot.

-Warren

That was excessively violent and completely unnecessary. I loved it.
