Remember, ha-ha, I'm in the Shallow End for this post...

I hope all my old surf friends are doing exceptionally well. With Ellie STILL off at the University of Edinburgh [now getting her PhD in Creative Writing... which she actually told Cousin Mary was her dream back in an on-air interview from January 28, 2012], I have been wandering aimlessly musically and creatively.

I eventually decided, for a change, that I was either going to write some punk tunes, or French love songs. I woke up in the middle of the night and decided to write French love songs. I wrote a few new tunes, then I realized the lead guitar in surf music is actually the vocal equivalent. So, I adapted a couple of our surf tunes to this genre.

If anyone heard our tune Last Kiss off our Longboard Mornings EP, this is the French love song version of it...

Hey Bill,

This is very cool. I love the idea of multi-purposing surf songs and you've done it really well here. Perfect translation to another genre!

I remember in some historic post here, someone mentioned that they always write words for their surf songs so each one has secret lyrics. I thought this was a cool thing and it seems to be catching on!

Incidentally, I had a surf tune of my own that I first recorded as a straight rocker and then decided to turn it into a punk song. So... I say to you: do both! In fact, there's a compelling challenge. Take any given surf tune and turn it into both a French love song and a punk song.

Anyway, thanks for sharing! Pretty music. It sounds like you rerecorded the entire musical backing and stripped it down a little, which seems appropriate. This is one of those songs that could get by with nothing more than the chanteuse, a stand-up bass, and a few thin chords with heavy tremolo. Real moody.

Sounds great! I was often turning vocal tunes to surf but never did the opposite, surely need to try!

Thanks much. I did rerecord the tune. I upgraded my entire studio over covid. I was looking to build a new studio computer from the ground up, but found Sweetwater had already created a great studio computer which they call the Creation Station. I upgraded Cubase to 12, added some additional high quality mics, etc. We also moved to a new house, and my studio now has a 12-foot ceiling and hardwood floors. Unfortunately, many of the old tune projects wouldn't transition over in total. But, I wanted to rerecord anyway.

This project has allowed me to work with other musician soloists for the first time, which I really wanted to do. Of the other tunes on the bandcamp site, "The Dove" includes a violin solo by a friend who is a Julliard grad, and was the Concert Master of the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra. He plays a unique 5-string violin. The tune "The Path" I built around an old 1950s progression, and includes solos from one of the best tenor sax players in the country, Juan Rollan. Juan plays with the incredible Latin salsa band LPT.

The last tune for the EP is built around our tune Sundays at Surfside Park, should be out soon. Thanks again for your comments. Here is the link to all the tunes: https://lonelyrose.bandcamp.com/album/french-love-songs
