Has anyone got experience with one of these? Wanted a Jazzmaster to go with my Strat for my surf guitar

Really I’d like to know if they’re good for surf or do I stump up for a Fender

I pre-ordered a Squier 40th Anniversary Jazzmaster (Desert Sand finish, maple neck, and Anodized Gold pickguard).

When it arrived, looked great but it had a number of issues. The "aged" hardware was cheap with some of pickguard screws already stripped.

Worse, the bridge was set way too high. This was due to the angled neck pocket being abnormally shallow, thus making the neck set high. A typical setup was not possible.

I ended up returning it. First time I've ever returned a Squier - I've been lucky with Squiers over the years. Guess I was due.

Mine may have just been from a bad batch. However, it's been reported by other folks (over on Offset Guitars (OSG) forum) that they ran into the same issue with their 40th Anniversary Jazzmasters or ones they checked out in a shop. However, one or two guys don't seem to mind the way the guitar as it is. YMMV

I really wanted to love that guitar. Seeing the same model with the heightened bridges on Sweetwater convinced me not to try for another but instead do my own parts build down the road some day with quality components.

In any case, I hope this helps. If possible, go to your local guitar shop that carries the Squier 40th Anniversary Jazzmasters to see if any of them appeal to you. Compare them to a Squier Classic Vibe '60s Jazzmaster - I think the CV '60s are better quality.

am i alone in preferring this setup? my main complaint with jaguar/jazzmaster bridge has always been that the rocking bridge often refuses to return to center, always screwing the tuning and intonation.

I always thought it was one of the things people liked about the mastery bridge, and the reason some go the tune-o-matic route - these Squier 40th anniversary JMs do not have that issue.

do you know if there is a jag equivalent?
