I just replaced the movie poster that I had posted on 9/9...scroll up the page. It's been updated with winning laurels at the bottom and will likely be updated again when this movie wins more awards at upcoming film festivals.

After 15 years, "Sound of The Surf" officially wrapped as of two days ago. The movie is on the festival circuit now and winning awards. DVDs and who-knows-what-else (streaming?) are ahead. Nice to see this after so long, but sad that Tom Duncan won't be here to see all of this unfold.

I bought a ticket to the documentary showing at the Newport Beach Film Fest. If you are in So Cal, it's playing on Oct 18, 5:30pm at the New Port Theater in Corona Del Mar, CA.

Here is the link for the specific show. You can view the trailer as well.

"Sound of The Surf" will screen next Tuesday night, the 18th, in Corona Del Mar, CA. The New Port Theater will show this movie on the big screen at 5:30 pm with a short Q&A afterwards. Tickets here:

I know many of you have waited and waited for this film during its lengthy production, and followed developments including the unfortunate and unexpected passing of Tom Duncan, the movie's Director, last year.

Hopefully, the film's exposure in festivals will find us a distributor. When that happens, we'll be a lot closer to DVDs. If you're within easy driving distance, please consider coming to the Newport screening next week. As of last weekend, the theater's capacity was halfway sold out.

To those of you reading this who bought a ticket for the Newport Beach Film Festival screening on 18 October, a hearty Thank You on behalf of Tom Duncan and myself. The screening has been SOLD OUT as of this morning.

"Sound of The Surf" is only just emerging on the market, but enjoying some degree of success on the film festival circuit. The more of this, the better, which should attract the attention of a distributor to make this film available to the rest of the world. I have no doubt that will eventually happen.

Is there any info on it’s future availability on Netflix, Amazon or some other streaming services?

I would have thought you would need a distributor to get a theatrical release but could do dvd/streaming releases independently? It looks like I was 0-for-3. While born and raised in SoCal, I am no longer close enough to attend a screening and so as REALLY looking forward to a dvd release.

I am not very knowledgeable about the film industry so I am making some assumptions about how it probably works: Finished (or near-finished) film tries to get a spot at film festivals...the objective being to showcase the film to attract potential distributor arrangements...and I think that there are country/region arrangements that need to negotiated...but I would think that distributor(s) have so much skin in the game for exclusivity that they would not want the filmmaker to independently sell DVDs of that film until that distributorship arrangement has expired. Wouldn't that cut into the distribution company profits if the filmmaker could sell the DVD on the side whilst the film is currently being shown in theatres of the same region?

I am just so glad that Mr Blair was able to bring this project to fruition so I am going to patiently await an eventual release on online/physical copy formats.

I would pay for streaming immediately. I doubt it will be shown in European cinemas and I don’t have a dvd player for many years)

Thanks for heads up john.
I thought I had missed my chance

I attended the Sound of the Surf documentary last night as part of the Newport Beach Film Festival. I can't say enough how much I enjoyed this film. I've been playing surf for a little over a year. Watching this doc was truly inspirational.

The film covers comprehensive ground from surf culture in the 1950's, when surfers mainly listened to jazz, to the rise of Dick Dale's popularity as a regular at the Rendezvous Ballroom, and through to the first, second and third wave of surf music. There was a lot of great vintage footage, especially of 1st wave bands, as well as all the wonderful witness interviews throughout.

Tom Duncan and John Blair did a truly remarkable job putting this film together. As John stated in the Q & A after the show, it was a 15 year journey to make this film.

A local surf fan posted that he had 2 extra tix,
David of the Scimitars and I were lucky enough to get them and go.
Truly honored to have been there.

It was a pretty cool event with a sold out crowd of around 160 people. Lots of former and present surf music musicians, and a really nice 2 1/2 minute field report/interview from KNBC-TV as well.

Next up: a screening at the Sunscreen West Hermosa Beach Film Festival on November 5 at 11:30AM and at the Red Rock Film Festival in Cedar City, UT (don't know date/time just yet). Then, on to possibly Sundance and SXSW this winter. Once we find a distribution partner, DVDs and streaming won't be far behind.

After all this time, it's finally arrived.

I was very lucky to attend w/BTD and friends. It was so cool to see some of the characters on screen in attendance, it made the event that much more special. The audience Q&A session was an added treat. Needless to say Sound of the Surf is a must see for any true music fan, highly educational and naturally entertaining.

I loved the part where Eddie Bertrand talks about how instrumental music gives the listener freedom to think their own thoughts. Righteous.

Thanks to John Blair for bringing this monument to us.
