How to Sew a Zipper: A Step-by-Step Guide for Beginners

Sewing zippers is easy, yet we throw out the garment or item if the zipper doesn't work. This skill might come in handy, saving the money you’ll spend on buying new clothes. Moreover, learning to sew zippers can help you whim up some creative sewing projects. We will teach you how to sew a zipper in this step-by-step guide for beginners.

You can also check out the top sewing product comparisons at https://allmylinks.com/craftsselection to buy high-quality supplies for your sewing projects. Sewing A Zipper: Step-by-Step Guide For Beginners

You'll Need

  • The appropriate length zipper. You can shorten your zipper if it is the wrong length for your project. Use plastic zippers instead of metal ones if you are a newbie sewer because they are simpler to sew.

  • You’ll need a zipper foot. Most sewing machines have a zipper foot, but if you've misplaced it, you might want to buy a set of presser feet from Amazon or eBay.

  • Scissors, thread, sewing machine, pins, and sewer's tape or scotch tape.

Step 1 - Finishing the Edges

First, clean up the fabric's edges that will be zipped together. You can use a conventional machine's zig-zag stitch or a serger. If using a serger, don't trim too much so the edges remain long enough for the zipper.

Step 2 - Stitch the Sides

Sew the two fabric pieces together with their right sides touching, stop sewing where the zipper should go. Use a regular stitch length and follow your pattern's seam allowance (usually ½ inch or ⅝ inch).

Make sure to backstitch at the ends.

Step 3 - Temporary Stitching

Sew the area where the zipper will be placed using a long basting stitch (between 4.0 and 5.0). Backstitching is unnecessary because it will be taken out afterwards.

Step 4 - Flatten It Out

Flip the fabric over and press open the seam allowance on the wrong side.

Step 5 - Prepare the Zipper

Lay the zipper tape facing down along the basted seam on the wrong side. Starting at the top, align the top of the zipper with the raw edge of the fabric. The zipper pull should be up. If your zipper has a metal stopper, it might be at the end.

Step 6 - Keep It in Place

On the backside, use a tape to secure the zipper temporarily. Both regular and specialty sewer tape will work.

Step 7 - Mark the Stop

When you flip the fabric over once more, attach a pin to the end following the zipper's metal retainer bar. By doing this, you can sew without scraping metal.

Step 8 - Stitch the Zipper

Now is the time to sew!

Switch to your zipper foot, then check the placement of your needle. Start by stitching down the right side of the zipper, if your zipper foot is on the right.

Conclusion

Learning to sew zippers is a great skill that saves your favorite items from being thrown out. You can easily repair zippers following these steps, restoring the value and style of your clothing and accessories.

SG101 Regulars, Please forgive my private joke. I just found it odd (suspicious) that BenGrahm and MaryHamilton both joined the forum on June 27, 2022, and both posted for the first time today. And both posted lazy questions that revealed nothing about themselves other than the desire to start the social media equivalent of a chain-letter. I assume one author for both posts and decided to have a bit of fun calling them out.

As usual I'm lurking when the rest of you are looking at the insides of your eyelids and flagging as often as I'm able to. Such is the life of a graveyard shift working stiff. Zzzzz

I saw your comment and it made no sense until I saw that other post by "MaryHamilton" - then I totally saw what you were getting at, and makes sense to conclude that those were new spamming accounts.

Real people named "Ben Graham" and "Mary Hamilton" published theories about the stock market in the early 1970s and before. There are no coincidences.
