Permalink Instrumental Covers of Modern Songs

New Topic

In the 60s, the Ventures (and other instrumental/surf bands) were known for doing instrumental versions of popular vocal songs of the day. If you’re in a band now, what modern songs are you covering as instrumentals?

Why this comes to mind is that a neighbor who plays in a cover band was telling me that they need to add more recent songs to their set. I was thinking, I wouldn’t even know what to add since I don’t really listen to any new music that’s played on the radio (or wherever music is played today). So I was wondering whether folks in surf bands are covering new music today as instrumentals.

Sean

Here's a recent project, by Tony Bald and Danny Snyder, of recent pop songs covered in the style of surf:

[Disclaimer: Being that I'm an old geezer who wasn't listened to mainstream pop music for about 50 tears, the songs on this album are largely unfamiliar to me, and in my limited perception, "modern".]

We sometimes cover some pop stuff form 80th and 90th but not the modern tunes. I’ve tried to listen to some modern stuff but rarely find it interesting. Surely not ready to play it just to please somebody.

But this is not the modern stuff) these tunes are some 30 years old. Yes, for me it also hard to accept that 90th were not some 10 years ago but 30…

Hah. This is exactly what I was thinking and what kind of prompted my post.

Sean

anyone got a 15 year old who can tell us what's up!

seriously though, the stuff my kid listens too largely doesn't have enough of a melody to try and play it on guitar. I'm not knocking it, but it's kind of rap or rap adjacent, and melody is definitely not the priority.

but there's got to be stuff out there that would work....

Check out the top 50 on Spotify. Perhaps there is something there.

Check your Jon/Nightriders' CDs, especially "Stampede" and "Moving Target."

I think there ought to be some recent TV or movie theme songs worth covering because people would recognize them. There was a recent where a version of the Game of Thrones theme (done by Frankie and the Pool Boys) was posted - I think that's a great one to cover.

Thanks for the mention! I haven't seen the new GoT yet, does it have new music? I agree it's hard to find new music worthy of instrumental covers. I work with kids, and they don't listen to new music! I can't bring myself to learn a cover of a, say, Taylor Swift song, but I'm sure she's melodic enough to make it interesting. I think Radiohead is a good candidate- have you heard the reggae version of OK Computer?
Also, TV themes-- they're only 15 seconds long, if at all. Peaky Blinders even cut out their amazing Nick Cave theme song.
After it's showcase on Stranger Things, and subsequently rising to #1 on the British charts, "Running Up That Hill" by Kate Bush seems ripe for a intro remake.
Below is my recent take on the Better Call Saul theme. Sorry, for some reason I can't embed the video)

The Surfrajettes did "Toxic" by Britney Spears

Woops, forgot the video link

The Mermen did a cover of the theme song for the theme for Yellowstone

Movie and TV themes are a great bet because they are recognizable to a fairly good number of people. I heard the Surfrajettes do Toxic, and they did it well, but that’s one is unrecognizable to me. I don’t listen to Britney Spears. You have to know your audience when picking instrumentals.

That said, here’s Larkin Poe doing the Mandalorian Theme https://youtu.be/oiStwBp05tM

Interesting take - very different from my cover of it - https://soundcloud.app.goo.gl/xCJV2B8x3j7osZnZ6

Merlin, that is a really cool song on your SoundCloud. I've never heard it before, would have thought it was an original.
