Permalink Mosrite kind of pick ups?

New Topic
Goto Page: 1 2 Next

Got myself an old japanese Mosrite the Ventures copy.
Don’t like the pick ups. What should I by and replace them with?

You may wish to contact Curtis Novak. He makes all kind of interesting and oddball stuff. He makes Mosrite pickups that fit in a Jazzmaster platform, but I don’t think he actually makes Mosrite pickups. However, there isn’t much that he can’t do.

Chances are, he can probably help you with some type of pickup upgrade.

He makes fantastic pickups. I feel like worst case scenario, you could send those pickups in for him to build new pickups using the flatware and covers.

Ok, maybe that is possibly the better scenario.

This is what you want, from Semie Moseley's daughter, who still hand winds them on the sewing machine she used when she made pickups for the original Mosrites.

Curtis Novak DOES make his pickups in the usual mosrite form factor. they simply say Novak Instead of mosrite. i have 6 different novak pickups and like them all. he even does the mosrite humbuckers with angled pole pieces for the neck position.

dana of course does mosrite pickups too. just wish she had any kind of website. would love to try both.

What don't you like about the pickups? Too much treble? Not enough treble? Mosrite pickups tend to be hotter and have more mid range than Fender pickups, so if you don't like them because they're too hot or too much mid range/not enough treble, then you probably don't want Mosrite replicas. Or, if the current pickups are thin and don't have much output, then you do want Mosrite replicas. Something to consider.

They are thin and don't have much output...

Dodger,
That would be because you have an early Japanese Mosrite knockoff. Your model is much like the "Morales" models from Japan. I can tell by the fretboard markers and the tremolo arm.
So - yes, the pickups stink. Go for some bucks and put in better Mosrite pickups from the manufacturers mentioned in this thread. Or get your present pickups re-wound. If you go that route, make sure they are scatter wound. Shoot for around 11.5K ohms on the bridge and 10.5K ohms on the neck.
BTW - If you put in any other pickup(s), figure that you'll be drilling extra holes in the body. Mosrite pickups have their own unique "footprint" - different from P-90s and humbuckers.
Hope this helps.

Are the pickups from Ed Elliott any good?

Yes, Ed's pickups are spot on replicas of the vintage Mosrite units. He worked with Semie Moseley in the 70s, and also makes great replicas of Mosrite guitars.

If you'd like, I'll rewind the PUs you have. Just buy the wire and pay the shipping each way. I'll scatter wind them to whatever resistance you want. I'll leave them unpotted or do a light or heavy potting. I'd get them back to you within about 4 weeks.

I've made about 20 PUs, most of which are in guitars I play regularly. Let me know if you are interested.

An interesting scenario would be to let me rewind yours and also buy some new ones. I'll bet the rewinds would stack up well assuming the magnets in them are good.

If I'd stop buying old guitars to fix, I might actually learn to play.

Another thought. Maybe the magnets are weak. A luthier could recharge or replace them.

Have you played with the pickup height.

Yes, the magnets are very weak...

Dodger,
Bite the $$$$ bullet and get some decent replacement pickups. There's not too much sense in polishing a turd with rewinds/regaussing of the old pickups.
Just keep them as original parts in case you someday sell the guitar.
Bob Shade at Hallmark guitars may have the pickups you need. Or consult the other manufacturers mentioned in this thread.
That axe will really wake up with some decent pickups.

I have to agree with Johnny Mosrite, look into a pair of good replacement pu's. You also might want to take a look at the stock pots, etc. MIJ guitars of that era tend to come with cheap mini pots, switches and wiring. At minimum, making sure your pots are the optimum values will help even new upgraded pu's sound their best. Even though the pu's in my Hallmark 65 Custom sounded really good, I swapped out the stock 250K pots for 500K pots and they sound even better (definitely brighter w/ more presence).

Ouch.

The decision is made - I ordered replacement pickups...

I think you’ll be glad that you did. That guitar is what- 50+ years old? I’d be inclined to think that the parts (especially the bobbins) could very well be brittle, and might not survive being dismantled and reassembled.

Please let us know when you get them, and how you like them.

Mossrites had P90's, but mostly very hot... I am a P90 fan, got them on my tele's, gretsches, guild even on one of my jaguars... Maybe you wanna get in touch with Guitar Fetish. The have a lot of P90 styles and can advise wich pick up will meet your sound. I have them on more than 5 guitars and one is my favorite of all times, a telecaster with bigsby and 2 p90's. Guitar Fetish doesn't have them on stock all the time, but they are worth the wait!
OK... can I get an endorsement? NOW? Sorry no, I really love these pickups! And their version of a Bigsby and.... and....
