Permalink New 1/4" Footswitch for Fender Cmbos w/ RCA jacks-Adapt

New Topic

Does anyone know if there's a specific adaptor that will allow me to use my new 2 button Fender Footswitch from my 65 Deluxe RI (or an old 2-button Peavey footswitch from the 80's) with my older Fenders that have the RCS plugs for the original 2-button footswitches?

Basically it would be a female 1/4 inch on one side and RCA plugs on the other side. The problem is that I have one of these adaptors I just described and it only works with a 1 button footswitch....I can only plug 1 of the RCA plugs into the vibrato jack in the back of my amp. If the other is plugged into the reverb jack the amp hums terribly and the reverb doesn't work at all. Also, this set up works only for the footswitch and the vibrato on my 68 Vibro Champ, 73 Bandmaster Reverb, and 76 Princeton Reverb. When I try it with my 67 Super Reverb it doesn't work at all, it only makes the Super hum a lot.

Does anyone know of a way to get these modern 1/4 inch plug footswitches to work for the old fenders with the RCA jacks? I would just buy a new one with the RCA jacks but I find the buttons are too close together and more often than not I step on them both, which is why the Peavey footswitch is nice.

Thanks,
-Ted

Check into stuff made by HOSA.

Either look at HOSA stuff at most local music shops (Guitar Center, etc) or just scour your local Radio Shack - as I recall, most have a wall full of those kooky adapters.

And that's the part that has me puzzled....I went to the big adaptor wall and got the adaptor that I thought should work, a female 1/4 inch on one side and RCA plugs on the other side...could it be that I got a mono (1/4" side) to stereo (RCA side) adaptor and I need a stereo to stereo adaptor since the 1/4" side has the two buttons? I'm not really too hip on the differences with cables when it comes to this part...

Hm, you'd need a stereo femal input with stereo RCA outputs. that SHOULD theoretically take care of things.
It'd flow this way:

"stereo" signal from two-button switch ---> stereo input on adapter ---> two RCA jacks on the other end of the adapter ---> RCA stereo cable ---> footswitch RCA jacks on your amp.

Then again, the answer could just be "no"...

Thanks SurfBandBill....I'm thinkin' that if it's going to work at all then it'll be like you said

I think I'll just bring my amp and footswitch to the music shop and try out the adaptor and stereo cable before I buy.
Thanks again for the help,
-Ted

You can put RCA tips on both of the wires. So just take off the quarter inch and solder on the two RCAs.

isn't it simply a matter of different wiring? Not All Two Button Footswitches Are Created Equal, I dont know too much about the RI's but I could imagine they changed something in the switching. also there might be some ground problem? if Im not mistaken in a vintage Fender the tremolo works of when the footswitch button is * connect, and the reverb is switched on when the button is disconnect* .... there maybe something there.

check the insides of a vintage fender footswitch and the RI one and see if they are wired the same.

Ok, I went to Radio Shack today and found the solution. For $6.99 I picked up a " 1/4" Stereo Jack to Dual Phono Plug" Y-Cable, no. 42-2548.
I tried this with my 2-button Peavey footswitch on all my old Fender combos, both Silverface and Blackface and it worked like a champ for both the reverb and the vibrato.

My other adaptor must be a mono 1/4" to stereo RCA, which is why only the vibrato and not the reverb worked with it. For all of you piggyback players, this would work if you need a footswitch for your vibrato and you haven't got an old one with the RCA plugs.

I havent tried it with the newer Fender 2-button footswitch, but I've got no reason to think it wouldn't work too.

Thanks for all the input fellas,
-Ted

Glad I could help.
