Good plugins for Reaper

There was a recent thread here on DAWs, and many members recommended Reaper. I’ve spent some time with it recently and can now work my way around tracks and get a basic mix.

What I’d like to know from you Reaper users is what effects you find particularly good, especially for compression and reverb.

And here's a general tip:

Be generous with Reaper's included EQ, ReaEQ I think it's called, and use the "mud free" setting to trim out boomy bottom end on drums and whatever else. I've been going through my songs recently and "remastering" them to bring up the clarity and cut the fat and it makes a big difference.

Great post, Redfeather! useful stuff.
Reaper's native plug-ins are precise, useful, fast and very powerful. The can be embedded into the UI, so that's a plus. You can go a long way with them, unless you require something fancy.

Or, in my case (to my determent) my ears are not highly tuned as an experienced audio engineer, my setup is far from studio grade (as most home hobbyists) and I'm a very visual person - I find FabFilter's plugin suite (not free!) a great aid. The interface and visual feedback are second to none, and of course, sound great.

Thanks to you, too, Ariel. The FabFilter plugins are indeed "not free!" A single plugin is $199. They have a 30-day trial, which I'll do, just to see what I'll be missing.

Here are a few pedals and amp model VSTs, I mostly wind up using the univibe out of this set:

As far as paid stuff, Black Friday is always a good time to score deals on VSTs. https://www.pluginboutique.com/ and https://dontcrack.com/ are good to keep an eye on.

Another thing worth mentioning is that good drums are an invaluable asset. I bought the Native Instruments Abbey Road 50s Drummer and am very happy to have it.

I'm not a drummer and I don't actually play my drum tracks but I do program them manually, hit by hit often, and it really brings a new dimension to music.

Here's an example of that set, where I was trying to reproduce Earl Palmer's track from the Capitol Records recording. Nailing all his fills was a little over my pay grade but it was still fun to try!
