Permalink New Guitar Day!

New Topic

Last week I purchased a Danelectro 59M NOS from Sweetwater.

My Eastwood Sidejack has been my main guitar - looks good, sounds good, but it's a boat anchor. I started looking for something lighter, yet still bright and chimey. Did my research and kept coming back to the Dano. I tried one and was convinced.

No one locally had a new one for sale, so I checked out Sweetwater where I bought my Princeton amp. The one I wanted, in the color I wanted, was on sale. Just as I was about to hit the "buy" button, a pop up notice advertised a demo model. Exact same one, but with a tiny chip on a chrome screw - otherwise perfect. And $90.00 more off the sale price!

So I jumped on it. It arrived a few days later and I have been practicing every day with it. Sounds great, easy to play, and inexpensive. Oh, it weighs in at exactly 6.0 pounds. Amazing what comes out of Masonite front and back and lipstick pickups, all originally designed to be sold cheaply at Sears!

Congrats! Those look like pretty sweet guitars. Every now and then I think about getting one of their twelve strings.

I’m also a Dano fan! I have a U2 from the ‘90s and it’s a great guitar, but there is limited upper fret access. Just wondering if the 59M has any better upper fret access? Regardless, I wouldn’t trade my U2 for anything. The sound is wonderful and quite unique. Congrats!

Upper frets on the Dano 59M are limited. I can get to the 18th fret, but that's it. Luckily, I don't play that much in the upper registers!

That is a really cool guitar. Hard to believe it only weighs six pounds!

MooreLoud.com - A tribute to Dick Dale. New EP Louder Than Life available on bandcamp and website. Taking guitar lessons from Jimmy Dale.

The Danelectros are built with a spruce frame body. Front and back are Masonite, a really dense particle board. It's a hollow body design.

The founder of the company was Nathan Daniel, an electronics engineer and not a guitar player, much like Leo Fender. He designed the guitar for Sears Roebuck catalog sales. The goal was to create a product that was inexpensive to produce and sell. The lipstick pickups were also his design. The result was on-target price-wise and created a unique and killer tone in the process. Today's Danos are much the same, with incremental improvements since the company's rebirth.

Nice Dano, congrats.
That Gretsch Rambler on the wall is pretty sexy as well!

Congrats on your new Dano! I love the sound of those lipstick pickups. And your's has the updated bridge. You'll have a lot of fun with that guitar!
