Halloween’s almost here! Don’t miss out on the terrifying surf stylings of Jim and the Sea Dragons and the Surf Hermits on their killer split EP The Beat From 20,000 Fathoms, out now on Sharawaji Record.

Very cool sound! That’s a very good mix going on, and the organ sounds so gnarly, it’s awesome. Apologies that the rest of this is not about your fine band. But I have to share this story. In high school in 1989, I found this record for 99 cents:

It’s a compilation from an 80s basement band called Smersh. They are so awesome! It was two guys in Scituate, MA with a sequencer and lots of enthusiasm. They released over 30 cassettes in the 80s. They used a dual tape deck to record “multitrack!” All overdubs with that tape hiss and massive noise floor. First tape was released in 1982 I think. The singer / guitarist Chris Shepard died in 1993 I think. Mike Mangino is the other 1/2 of the band, and I’ve communicated with him many times over the past few decades. I’ve managed to find about 12 or 13 of those original 80s cassettes.

This band is a huge influence on me, and your album title brought it all back.

Thanks Tide, and Surfcat! It was definitely a fun CD to record. Big shout out to the Surf Hermits and their rocking version of Frankenstein. I thought I was being clever with the name! Smersh sounds great, we were actually considering releasing the EP on orange cassette!

Nice instrumental cover of a Slickee Boys song!

Thanks for the kind words everyone! It was a fun project, and extra cool to get to hang out with the Sea Dragons...

Edward, Good catch on the Slickee Boys tune! It has always been one of my favorites. The Slickees just got there copies today.

Were the Slickee Boys an East Coast (NY or Baltimore) band?
