Hey everyone,
Some of you will know The 'Verb from the last 16 or so years that I played in with Jake (who used to be on here all the time). Since that group isn't really playing too often with one member out of state and everyone being busy, I have formed a new surf band, The Desolate Coast.
We have an EP, "This Can't Be A Dream", ready for listening and download and another to be released at a Thom's Big Seattle Surf Show in December. These recordings include Wendell who some of you saw fill in on drums with The 'Verb at one of those shows, and myself.
We also hope that you enjoy these recordings and the new group! I'll have some videos to go along with these very soon.
We have a full lineup now and are looking forward to seeing many of you at said show in December. After December, we hope to get back to recording and have another ready in late Spring.
This Can't Be A Dream EP

Well, you sold a copy to me.
The sound captures the classic Surf sound, without sounding nuanced. The vibe, the feel, the whole shebang sounds right. You don’t fall into the trap of letting the reverb overwhelm the music. With the exception of Escape From Ape Canyon, the sound is very uncluttered, and if a song is going to be called Escape From Ape Canyon, it should be a bit over the top. It’s a fun tune. Pretty much everything else is fairly open sounding and at times it almost sounds like a trio. That’s my preference.
The mix is also excellent. The lead guitar is out front, but not to the point of drowning out the band. I don’t know who mixed this, but they deserve recognition.
Very nice work.

I'm listening after a full day in the shop. As the dunes wash away was by far my favorite. I think you hit a home run with that one.

Thank you very much! I actually did the mixing on this one - a lot of doing and redoing. Ape Canyon is actually a very lunar looking canyon full of pumice gravel and lava you hike/bike through on your way up Mt. St. Helen’s.
Thank you for listening!
I think that bridge is the one at Deception Pass. It’s Wendell’s picture, so I just asked him.
“As The Dunes Wash Away” is one of my favorites to play (it’s in our set) and was quick to write, which is always nice.
Again, thank you all for the kind words and for listening!

I just gave it a full listen and was just as impressed the second time. There’s definitely some great material; well played and well recorded.

Thank you all again!
Jake and Mike are not in the group. They were originally considering joining but weren’t able to make it work. It was pretty close to being 3/5 off the’Verb.

Eric,
Thom told me about two or three(?) months ago about you reforming the 'Verb (at the time, it was sounding like it) so I was really psyched! Bummed that Mike and Jake aren't part of this band but am really glad that you're still writing and playing surf music!
I also bought the album earlier this afternoon and on my third listen through it. Not as energetic as the old 'Verb material but still really melodic and I can hear the 'Verb sound in these songs. So far, I think I like Escape from Ape Canyon and This Can't Be A Dream the best.
See you in December!

Thanks Tien! We really appreciate it!
I would agree that these six songs skew more relaxed and melodic than the average ‘verb song. They’re probably more “catchy” than the typical ‘verb material and more thoroughly arranged, at least on record. The other side of that is that The ‘Verb was a bit more driving and aggressive (particularly live) because of it being more straight forward. I’ll still try and get horns in on a song each EP.
Though this group did come close to having three members of The ‘Verb, it was always planned to be its own project and sound. I know that there are definitely similarities - I can’t help it, but hopefully it’s also something new in its own. Wendell brings a different feel to the drums than Jason (he also did some electric piano on this and the next EP). Although I am playing the rest of the instruments on this and the next ep to be released in December, we have a great group of musicians that will add their own feel to the group as well.
We are excited for the show in December and are working hard to get everyone up to speed!

I’m debating coming up.
Not really wanting to attend inside shows,
Maybe I’ll wear an old diving helmet.
