Hello all,
Looking to step up my surf sound. I've lurked here mostly, reading and not contributing or interacting too much. But,wanted to throw what I'm working on out there, and maybe get some feedback. Perhaps a bit of a "build thread", too.
I've moved from a solid state Fender 2x12" amp, to a 50w Kustom Defender v30. Its got wonderful tone, and makes me want to not ever stop playing. Definitely my favorite amplifier to date. I love the seafoam green tolex, and I think that I'm going to wrap not only my new reverb unit, but also my amp head and speaker cabinet with it. Also wanting to use a woven grill cloth, similar to that found on Orange Amplifiers.
I got started by building my cabinet. I wasn't looking to build a clone that would fool anyone, or try to pass the unit off as an original or reissue Fender unit. So, I went with the dimensions of 19" wide, 10" tall and 7.5" deep. On the back cover I started 1.5" from each side of the back panel and made the openings each 6.5" wide and 2 3/8" tall. Built the cabinet with 3/4" "select grade" pine and used 1/4" birch plywood for front and rear panels. I recessed the front panel just enough that I could switch to 3/8" plywood, if I choose to go thicker. Otherwise the 1/4" plywood will just be recessed a bit.
I ordered this chassis shorturl.at/yJTW7 and this small parts kit shorturl.at/foyD9
Haven't ordered my tubes yet, but did order some Fender cabinet corners, slides and a carry handle. I ordered enough tolex and grill cloth for the reverb unit, my amplifier head and speaker cabinet. Excited to see them all together, once finished.
