Thank you, Martin! This is the perfect answer to the question, "I would love to learn to play surf music. Where do I start?".

Here is the track list that Martin shared with me:

OK, I bought it. Used PayPal. The wetransfer link email showed up in a couple of hours. I had no problem with the download. My review:

The book is in PDF format and is excellent. The layout is clean and clear. Martin provides analysis and practice tips for each song. Very cool.

These are classic surf tracks. (Personally, "Ace of Spades" and "Swinging Creeper" are the only two that are unfamiliar.) The rest are at he top of the chart for first-wave (early 60's) surf's greatest hits. I've searched tab books, the internet tab sites, YouTube, and even the video game RockSmith to assemble my collection of these tabs. Mr. Schmidt has done all the work and made it easy for anyone new to surf guitar to get started right. I have compared the tab to my collection and the way I've learned to play these songs and, while there are differences, as should be expected, I found Martin's transcriptions/arrangements to be first rate, even better than what I had learned in some cases. (BTW - If you are new to the SurfGuitar101 forum, Tikidog is Martin Schmidt, AKA The Incredible Mr. Smith, guitarist for the German Surfpunk band The Razorblades, and the author of several surf related books including The Surf Guitar Book, the best surf tuition book available, IMHO.)

And let's not forget that Martin has included MP3s of full tracks AND backing tracks, played impeccably. These are well worth the price alone. Learn the tab and with the backing tracks you've got an instant surf set for an open mic night or surf stomp.

I guess this review is for newcomers to SurfGuitar101. Most of the old hands here probably already know these and won't be interested in making the purchase, but if you've come to this site looking for how to get started with surf guitar, buy this book now. I also highly recommend Martin's The Surf Guitar Book. It has more technique information with exercises, how-to's, and info on surf gear. It also includes a large section of modern surf tab along with full and backing tracks.

Thanks for the nice review Tim! Looks like I reached my goal...
The SURF GUITAR BOOK Vol. 2 is in the making and will explore the possibilities of modern surf guitar a bit more.
Hopefully more people will get turned on by the beauty of Surf Guitar Smile

I bought this, downloaded it, printed it, and put it in a notebook for posterity and ease. Thanks for providing this service!

Tiny bit of feedback that might help your future customers - either page numbers or adding song name to the bottom of each page would be much appreciated. Ask me how I know! (Actually don't, it is a long story involving a dog).

I'm going to have to check this out!

SilverFlash - I saw you mentioned Rocksmith. I've been messing with that as well. There is a decent amount of The Shadows, some Ventures, only one from Astronauts, one from the Chantays, a little Messer Chups, a Man or AstroMan, one from The Marketts, two from Dick Dale. But it is VERY limited. No Baja. No Mr Moto. No Banzai Surf, ...

Have you tried the CDLC? There are a few more choices (like a bunch of Shadows!) - but still very limited. This is funny. I was working through Perfidia by The Shadows. Did the rhythm part a few times. Been working on the bass. And pretty bad at the lead. I grabbed a bunch of surf CDLC and set it in a song list and have been going through on each part. Kinda missing a lot, but having fun. (I get that Perfidia is really an instrumental and isn't surf - but The Shadows often come up as kinda in the vicinity and kinda sorta surfesque)

Anyway - another resource is great! I see you are in Atlanta area. I'm on the northwest suburbs side, outside the perimeter.

Hi someotherbruce, Cool that you are in Atlanta. It’s always great to find another local surf music fan. You need to try to attend the Southern Surf Stompfest on October 2, if the delta variant doesn’t cancel it. I live on the eastside, outside the perimeter in the exurbs.

Regarding Rocksmith. I am a big fan of the remastered 2014 version. The makers of the game, Ubisoft, are moving it to a subscription-based platform with the name RockSmith+. I received beta testing access and the first thing I did was look for the instrumental surf music. Sadly, I found only two, The Hearse, and Maksha at Midnight by Bruce Johnston from the album Surfini’ ‘Round the World, which I found only mildly interesting. The beta is now over, and I am not subscribing, at least not until the library of songs, especially surf, is greatly expanded.

(For the uninitiated, Rocksmith is an educational video game that allows you to use a real guitar to learn songs. The makers license actual songs and even model the sound of the guitars. Rocksmith presents the tracks in a tab-like format that you play along with, and it keeps track of your accuracy. It will allow you to isolate and slow down sections to practice. I have found it to be very helpful. It’s like a guitar teacher that is infinitely patient and absolutely unforgiving (the amount of unforgiveness is adjustable, to some degree. I keep it pretty strict.) The software comes with some songs, but additional songs can be purchased as DLC from Ubisoft. Unofficial songs are available from the Rocksmith user community and are called CDLC.)

I have not tried the CDLC, but I have purchased a good amount of DLC. I will check it out one of these days. Out of the available official DLC here is my Surf/Early Instrumental Rock set list:
__
Pipeline – The Chantays
Apache – The Shadows
Penetration – The Pyramids
Walk Don’t Run – The Ventures
Misirlou – Dick Dale
Wipe Out – The Surfaris
Surf Rider – The Lively Ones
Space Ostrich – Disonaur
Surfin’ USA (yeah, I know…) – The Beach Boys
Tequila – The Champs
Rebel Rouser – Duane Eddie
Green Onions – Booker T. & the MGs
La Bamba – Ritchie Valens

Sadly, none of these were automatically carried over to the new Rocksmith+. I read that they were having to negotiate all new license agreements for the new platform. I do think Rocksmith 2014 is a great product and, for someone new to surf guitar that would be interested in it as an educational tool, I believe, if they watched for sales, they could purchase the game and the DLC above for under $30 USD, and then they would need a $25 realtone cable to plug into their PC. (That’s enough marketing for Rocksmith. Ubisoft, I accept paypal…)

Back to the thread at hand… It sounds like Martin’s book would be perfect for you. BTW - Do you have GuitarPro? I find that it is a great tool for slowing down tracks to play along with. (note to self: find out if Brian would be willing to allow GuitarPro files to be posted in the downloads section here at SG101.)

If you are playing on PC rather than console, you can add the following to your list:
Scotch and Guitar - The Astronauts
Flight of the Surf Guitar - The Atlantics
Hava Nagila - Dick Dale
Surf City - Jan & Dean (okay, this one's pop)
Escape Velocity - Man Or Astro-man? (this one is well charted and fun to play)
Driftin' - The Drifters (not surf, but fun instrumental)
Out of Limits - The Marketts

Messer Chups
Cat Mobile
Flash in the Night
House of Exorcism
Hula Tikula
Padre Pizzicato

The Shadows
36-24-36 (bass only)
Big Boy
Dance On
F.B.I.
Guitar Tango
Kon Tiki
Nivram (the charter for this used way too much reverb - kinda unplayable)
Perfidia
Wonderful Land
The Frightened City
Going Home
Moonlight Shadows
Riders in the Sky
Apache
Geronimo
Man of Mystery
Music of the Night
Peace Pipe
Return to the Alamo
Sleepwalk
Spring is Nearly Here
Theme for Young Lovers

Wipe Out - The Surfaris

The Ventures
Diamond Head
Hawaii Five-O
James Bond 007
Jingle Bell Rock
Rider on the Sky
Sleigh Ride
Apache
Batman Theme
The House of the Rising Sun
Secret Agent Man
Walk Don't Run

Some have Lead, rhythm and bass. A lot have lead or lead and bass only. Some are more instrumental than surf, but still fun to play.

I don't have Guitar Pro. I run linux, but see Guitar Pro 7.0 can run on Linux using PlayOnLinux, so I'm assuming 7.5 could as well, using either PlayOnLinux or Lutris. I might give it a shot. Have you found a good amount of charts for surf music there?

And sorry - this kind of veered off. I will check out the E-book!

I'm bumping this thread as the last couple years have been tough on musicians. Yet Martin found it in his heart to help Samurai and his family.
Now it's time to help Martin. Order a copy. Even if you already know all these songs, it's worth it for the backing tracks to practice with.

I purchased a copy last week! This one, as well as the Surf Guitar Book, are a great resource to have.

Fender Stratocaster American Pro II
Fender '65 Deluxe Reverb Reissue

I've just ordered it for myself. I already know a lot of these, but having tabs for some of these songs will be helpful for me to sit down and learn entire songs rather than just the main riffs. And I'm happy to help support someone who is helping out Samurai.

While visiting the Razorblades website, consider buying one of Martin's CD's, or albums..... or two!

Patrick

Downloaded mine today. Thank you again Martin. Great companion to the first book.

Martin also has some other excellent CDs besides the Razorblades. The Hollywood Gangsters do their own take on music from Televison and Film, and Mr. Smith and the Jazz Police is a beautiful collection of jazzy instrumentals, even if you are not into jazz. Martin is a very industrious fellow.
