Okay, this is just thinking out loud... so don't start the rumor mills yet.
Some friends and me were talking about trying to start a yearly event, Surfapalooza. The idea would be to get about 8-10 of the best surf bands to come play a 45-60 minute set (each). Try to set the venue in SoCal (obviously) and maybe try to do in in May (like the Sunday before Memorial Day).
Now, the question: What 10 bands would get your attention and make you want to drive/fly out to southern Cali to spend a day drenched in reverb?
2nd question: Has this already been done? and what was the outcome?
thanks!

An hour set is too long. Make it 30-45. Holiday weekends are bad for drawing people. Also 8 bands is a ton. I know it is supposed to be Lollapalooza but I don't think many surf fans can spend 8-10 hours in the sun as your standard drug crazed festival goer can.
I don't think Southern California is the obvious location. We could sell this event out in Seattle at a good sized venue if the right bands showed.
I'd fly down for...
Madeira
Slacktone
Satan's Pilgrims
Ghastly Ones
Bambi Molesters
Surf Coasters(if they got back together)
The Nebulas
Pollo Del Mar
Cosmonauti
Meshugga Beach Party(added bonus of meeting Mel and Danny)
The 'Verb
Monotones(Wannes, want to make a trip over here?)
However, that is unlikely. Most likely the bill will be a standard California surf bill that you can catch 3-4 times a year that isn't terribly interesting to myself because I either don't own the album of the band or I don't really buy into the aesthetic of the band which one needs to do if they don't really have access to the music.
All the bands I listed could draw very well in most places in the country(except for The 'Verb).

I don't think it's fair to have ten. I really think the event should be minimum of three days with round the clock surf. Remember Ozzy got dismissed form Lollapalooza and started Ozzfest ...and it's doing very well since.
Having ten bands a day for three days would be HUGE. I don't think anything like that has ever been promoted but the summer would be the time to do it. I think May is too early.
It's totally doable but would take major help with leasing a place for the three days, having power, adequate restrooms and other facilities, you could get hot dog stand folks for food (nachos, hot dogs, burgers, etc.), have adequate parking at the site, etc. Lots of logistics to consider but it can be done with EVERYONE pitching in.

Hey UncleWaldo :
That's a great idea, surf festivals aren't the most common thing but I think if done correctly it could draw a lot of surf fans.
Good luck with that.

Adrien from CHUM and Ted from the Detonators put together a yearly show here in So. Cal. on the Sun. of Memorial day weekend.
They call it the South Bay Surf Stomp.
it draws from 50 to 120 people.
I would love to see a huge surf fest with some of the bands that Jake mentioned above.
But you'd have to pay alot of Money to get those bands here, and
you cannot Guarentee a huge crowd to pay the bands.
its a double edged sword.
if you put something together like that please let us all know.
if you need help getting bands, PM me, I know about 60 local So. Cal. bands.
Jeff(bigtikidude)
p.s. are you in a band?
where are you located?
and do you go to many live surf shows
if so who and where?

Here is my plan. I win the lottery, then I put on a huge surf festival in Iowa in the middle of the country. I fly out all the bands. Proceeds go to local charity. Anyone in on this with me?

I'm game. I guess I might as well go ahead and win the lottery too, so's I can help out.
On a similar surfapalooza-related note. I've fantasized about the idea of having a whole bunch of bands come out to UC Davis where I'm studying for a huge surf extravaganza. Just putting that idea out there. I know you're all intrigued. ![Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes](/media/smiley/images/icon_rolleyes.gif)

but um whats the incentive to go to Iowa Brian?
don't get me wrong, I love corn, but do we really need to see miles and miles of it?
sorry Just Razzing.
If I won the Lottery, I'd pay to have all the best bands and the surf fans from around the world, and their wives and kids. and have it all ages outside so the dads could be there and not say they couldn't make it because.......................................................................................
Insert one of hundreds of reasons (I hear all the time)here.

I am for such an event, but when I look at the turnout for the free beach shows in Huntington Beach _every weelend during the summer_, I wonder where you would find enough fans to support your idea.
But if it would work out how much would you pay a band?

I'm all for that, as long as we don't have to pay for a hotel room.

Me thinks you'd need gimmicky incentives: perhaps a longboarding masters competition? Add a Hawaiian Tropic bikini contest. Perhaps a Tom Cruise lookalike bartender mixing drinks ala "Cocktail?" ... and of course, beach blanket bingo! And a spring break destination ala Cocoa Beach.
SoCal is oversaturated with surf music. Better held in Cancun. Or, hey here's an idea: Iowa. (Brian, isn't Iowa overrun with college kids during spring break?)

I think it could potentially work if such an event were held as part of a pre-existing occasion, like something along the lines of a street fair or something. Have a bunch of surf bands play where you already know there will be lots of people--some of them will be drawn over to the performances just out of curiosity, and if the true-of-heart surf purists show up in full, then the net turnout might not be too bad...hopefully.

Can I give you a little friendly advice: don't poop where you eat. You have basically insulted any other band that plays So Cal... You would do well to edit these comments before they make the web. And when YOU want to play California, one of those bands might actually hook you up with a gig.

Hey Gang-
I'm in Sacramento area and I work in Entertainment lighting so I have my foot in the mud...so to speak.
I think a gig like this would be "do" able as long as you keep it small (at first) and develop your fan base. Get larger as your audience grows. You don't want to blow your whole wad on the first event- It will do nothing but piss off your audience...and your bands.
I think in a festival like this, it is vital to have LOTs of unsigned unknown acts- These type of festivals were started in main stream music to give under listened acts a chance to get their music out there (Lilith Fest comes to mind) Unnamed acts bring their own fan base- which buys others Cd's, T-Shirts, and eats large amounts of Nachos and Dogs...
With the Unknown acts you shoot to get maybe two or three NAMES- Shit say its for a good cause and Dick Dale will close out the evening (especially for the environment or wild animals). For something like this it may even be smart to get Dean Torrance's(Jan and Dean) All Star band - The have a few of the First wave players in their group and THEY DRAW Audience members outside of those of us who are Surf Guitar purest-This means $$$$-
Festivals cost $$$ and lots of it. If you want to stay alive you will need to accommodate and think outside the box a little for the bottom line.
I like the idea and would love to help. I also have access to staging and a river front venue- So drop me a line when things get serious-
