I'd love to know how any of you guys do it? I get home from work at between 6:30 -7pm - eat dinner, help my wife put the kids to bed and by then it's almost 9pm - that's 5 days a week ( I play through headphones after 10pm or crank the amps Saturday morning at 8am and rouse my condo neighbors - rest of my weekends are filled with birthday parties, swimming, the park, beach etc. I guess when my kids are teens they'll ignore me then I can start playing out - maybe I'll still be able to pluck a few notes...
seems to me that it's a matter of priorities, not possibilties.
I have a 2 and a 4 year old, and I go to rehearsal once a week. How do I do it? I grab a sandwich on the way home and take off for rehearsal right a way. My wife picks up the kids, feeds 'em and puts 'em to bed. Is she a saint? hell no. my wife has yoga class once a week and the routine switches. So we have two days a week where we dont eat as a family and have to do some single parenting. no big deal, "have fun honey."  actually, i kinda cherish the moments with my kids alone - granted, they also make me feel very happy Im not a single parent. respect to all of those, who really dont have the time to play in a band.
My band doesnt play out much, for different reasons, but even we could play more I wouldnt want to do more than say 20 shows a year, yes, because of family life. (love it!) But you know, I take my kids somewhere alone when my wife wants to go to the hairdresser, or goes visit a friend or whatever, and my wife takes care of the kids when Im off doing something or have a show. And I do NOT go to ALL the birthdays of ALL my in-laws. Talk about time-saver  . awesome bunch of people, but they're just too many to visit them all. And we still spend most our sundays as a family, go figure. I strongly believe in doing stuff for yourself, man. Im in a mariage, I haven't become the mariage. And I also strongly believe that that's the example I want to set for my kids, really.
anyway, my two cents, no disrespect meant about the choices anyone makes in his/her life - just realize they are choices.

When I was married, I never got to play, AT ALL! But I have sent all ex-wives and girlfriends down the road. My kids are ages 23, and 21, and they play music, and have gone to college to be recording engineeers.
I am a tile setter by trade, but am getting too old to be on my knees everyday, so I am putting all my energy into the band these days. We want to make a living at music now, and do tile work on the side! Opposite of what we have been doing.
I voted YES, we are currently booking shows every day of the week, and are looking to travel to shows,wherever that may take us...hopefully to your neighborhood!

My non-surf band (See Jane Run) plays 2-3 gigs a year. I've been with these guys since 1992 and it's always been that way since we play primarily original tunes. I think the record was 5 in a year once. Now that the Aquatudes are nearly formed (me, Dick the drummer, and almost a bass-player) and there's a support system here in the northeast (NESMA), I'm looking forward to some more gigging with other like-minded bands in the near future.

Once every few months. I see no point in playing out a lot becasue in our case it would make the crowd small. Of course if you got the time and the audience, why not.

I've worked as a tilesetter before and that is grueling work. It's not heavy labor, but you have to work extended periods of time in uncomfortable positions and it wreaks havoc on your body.

I like the Thin Set. That's great Danny! And you ae right, one could go on all day... The Hardibackers, Don't Walk Or Run On My New Floor!, The Floaters ( although that one has other meanings).
Are you still in the construction buisness? And how's that finger?

I play in two bands (country and surf/instrumental). Together, I play out 3 times a month.
ps - Surfabilly...a friend's band used to be big around here did that style...The Reverb Rockets

We play out twice a month and with everybodys busy schedules we never get a chance to rehearse but everyone in the band does thier homework before a gig and the outcome is a tight killer set.

We've only been playing 2-3 shows a month, but I've been pretty picky here lately about the gigs we'll take.
I generally don't like to play less than 2 sets or play with more than one other band, so a lot of them are 3-4 sets. I'd love to play more, especially anywhere but Eugene, or as I call it "musician's hell" but our bass player and drummer both play in like 6-7 bands and it's a scheduling nightmare. We rehearse every Monday evening in my garage, and I try to introduce a new song every couple of weeks to keep it interesting.

The TomorrowMen are kind of the opposite. We prefer to only play 1 set. I really believe that there is such a thing as too much instrumental surf music, especially from the same band (blaspheme! :omg:) OK, maybe not Slacktone, but pretty much everyone else. Maybe I just enjoy hanging out with all our friends who come out to see us too.

We (ReliK) are going through a bit of a dead patch at the moment with our sets starting to sound a bit boring. This one of the reasons I have started introducing 'surf' instro music in between sets to try and break it up a bit, hence the reason I landed here in a round about way.
Our sets are usually 12-15 songs in length or about 40 - 50 mins long. Luckily for us, the footy season ends next weekend and so that will be the end of the Friday night gig for awhile as we go into 'summer' recess and work on some new material.
I can see what Danny is saying about wanting to hang out with the people who come to see you play as that is part and parcel of the fun. For us though, that usually doesn't happen until about midnight by which time most people are drifting off for one reason or another.
Maybe the quick killer set followed by 3 hours of eating, drinking and being merry is the way to go.

Yeah, I'd have to agree completely with this one. Unless we're playing to a true 'surf' audience, many times we'll lose an audience around hours 2-3. Just the nature of the beast I suppose.

That's precisely why we've started adding some non-surf '60s vocal tunes in our sets.
Eugene, Oregon is not the epicenter of surf guitar aficionados by any means.

At the moment, people are loving the 'surf' sound that we put on, even though it's only 3 songs or maybe 4. (depending on whether or not we feel like having a lunge at Misirlou) They ask for more, which is great, but we don't know anymore yet.
I don't know, for the moment though, it's all good fun.

Honestly, anything over an hour is too much unless you are a headlining band and the audience is very familiar with your music and are totally into the band.
