I am curious how many members of this site actually play out so let's do a poll. Please be honest - and please don't avoid voting if the answer is no otherwise we'll have a skewed poll result. Thanks. I would love to be playing but can't seem to find the time - so I have to say NO for myself - JC

I am soooo guilty as charged... If I could play guitar at my desk in the office I would be doing it (I do sometimes bring my axe in the car and run out and play during lunch).

I'd love to know how any of you guys do it? I get home from work at between 6:30 -7pm - eat dinner, help my wife put the kids to bed and by then it's almost 9pm - that's 5 days a week ( I play through headphones after 10pm or crank the amps Saturday morning at 8am and rouse my condo neighbors - rest of my weekends are filled with birthday parties, swimming, the park, beach etc. I guess when my kids are teens they'll ignore me then I can start playing out - maybe I'll still be able to pluck a few notes...

I play and occasionally record with 4 groups. However I don't have any kids and, as long as I take care of my household and work responsibilities, have a very supportive wife. I'd imagine that if I had kids and a higher mortgage payment I would be done. I consider myself very lucky to be 38 and playing out regularly.

My daughter is 18, and pretty self-sufficient these days...and I teach, so I get to take some extended time off. We practice as a band maybe six weekends each year. I play out three or four times a year.

Approximately 150 gigs a year split between four bands.

Youth and enthusiasm are no match for age and treachery.

My wife and I have no kids so there is no issue with little screaming little rugrats taking up my time (you can tell I'd make a terrible parent anyway). My wife says I get uptight if I don't surf or play music enough. Bless her heart.

I guess I won't be uptight tomorrow because we play at the Baja Cantina tonight!
Cheers,
Ted

I checked "Yes" but not Surf.
We aren't really a surf band as much as we are a garage type rock. We just steal bits and pieces out of surf and stick it into our formula.

We do play with a lot of surf bands. About 2 out of every three shows has us with at least one surf-instro band. We do on average 2 shows a month. Maybe see more after the CD releases.

It is tough with kids no doubt. Still, the deal is that you make time for your wife to do something and she makes time for you. If you can leave work early one day a week and get 4 hours to practice together, and the rest of the time practice yourself, you should be OK to have a band. Gigs are usually after bedtime anyway. Plus gigging isn't the most important thing, playing with others is.

We play out one or two times a month most of the year. It get a little slow between November and March.
Surf is what we love to play so playing for surf music fan is very cool.
We also play blues and 60's stuff at parties(with too much reverb naturally)

Is that too much reverb?

But it's so much fun watching the audience react to what you play and how you play it.

We play every 'other' week at the local footy club for the Friday night boozing crowd, it's a good way to practice and play at the same time because we know most of the people there.

About once a month we play at a larger venue for one function or another, that's the 'show', Friday nights are just fun.

I play out a bunch. Anywhere from 30 to 50 shows a year, it seems.

~B~

not in a band currently, but I have sat in with many bands over the years.

1 to 3 songs sometimes.

I don't play out because I don't yet have a band. A band is kind of important, if one plans to play out. Otherwise, I've played for a few friends, here and there, and I've played outside, but that's about as far as my "quest to become a guitar god" has gotten.

I play at least 1 show a month. This month was good since we played the 2nd, 3rd, and 4rth. We only have one show booked for September right now though.

I am super sweet

We play out 5-6 times a month.

I played some solo rockabilly a few months ago, that's it. I'm trying to get a surf outfit together. I might have found a drummer, so hopefully soon I'll be rockin the reverb...

Once or twice a month..bout right for us...

I played for the kids at the elementary school I work at. Just me no band. Not a real gig, but it counts for something.

I wonder how 'Surfabilly' would sound, this needs investigation...
