Well.. it is a rule... definitely hasn't been consistently enforced over the years as it's impossible for me to know if a track is unique for the comp or not. If you have an alternate take or track/demo that would be preferable but I'm not sure I care that much. What does everyone else think? The rule was put in place because some bands would just drop tracks off already released CDs. I say go for it if that's all you got!

The rule about having unique tracks for the comp is what has kept me from contributing, fwiw. It could be the case that I don't understand how this comp is distributed. As far as I can tell, it's a download link that is pretty much exposed only to the members of this board? If I were going to write, record and then pay for a tune to be mixed and mastered properly, I'd probably want to have it available for wider distribution, be it vinyl or spotify or something. So for that reason, I haven't put a song on the sg101. I do love listening to all the bands that do, though! I'm not complaining. Just throwing my .02 out there, since it was asked for.

Then upload a demo or live recording!

If you were going to sell it, the money could go to SG101 to pay for the upkeep of the site

Call me crazy, but if people want to submit properly produced tracks, perhaps a second companion compilation would be more appropriate. Heck, you could do something like K records. Have bands give a free license and sell it!

I get the idea, now. Though I’m curious what the reasoning of wanting an exclusive track is. Usually, comps ask for exclusive tracks because they want the comp to sell. And, therefore, exclusive tracks make people more likely to buy the release. But since this is a free comp mainly to hear what everyone on the board is up to, why the request for exclusivity? I don’t mean to dwell, and I know it’s been said that the rule is pretty flexible. This is just a question that popped up in my head while reading this exchange.

Sam I think there are a couple more important reasons than any theoretical legal issues or exclusivity. Keep in mind the overall theme of the forum, the "101" in SG101. This website has been setup to give surf music players of all levels, a place to feel welcome. The annual comp - by extension - was created primarily as a place where our members can show off the progress of their own musical journey, and especially to encourage our newer players or those who can't devote the time to building up high skills. Hearing your bedroom masterpiece next to a polished album ready track can be discouraging for some, not all mind you, but some.

The second reason is by limiting submissions to unreleased material by those of us who are able to produce professional recordings, it serves as an outlet for us to present something unique just for our fellow surf music nuts, a sort of note of appreciation and camaraderie. Sharing a song destined to be heard (potentially) by the great masses diminishes the novel aspect of the comp.
